Manzella's Game Winner Gives Women's Soccer 2-1 Victory Over Bryant In Double Overtime

Smithfield, RI – Junior forward Isabella Manzella scored the golden goal in the 105th minute, giving the Wagner women's soccer team (5-7-0; 2-3-0 NEC) a 2-1 victory over Bryant (4-8-0; 2-3-0 NEC) on Thursday afternoon.

FIRST HALF
  • The Seahawks nearly struck for the game's first goal three minutes into the half as sophomore Kayla Barbosa sent a shot to the top left of the goal, but Bryant's Kathryn McNeil was there for the stop.
  • On their first possession of the contest, the Bulldogs were successful as Catherine Bean was able to get one past Wagner junior keeper, Erin Kelly, as Bryant went ahead, 1-0.
  • In the 14th minute, Barbosa lined up for the free kick and delivered a booming strike on target, but McNeil was in the right position to make the save.
  • Bryant charged forward and looked to increase its lead as Katie Cronin stepped into one from the right side. This time, it was Kelly for the Seahawks that was able to thwart the scoring chance, keeping it a one-score game.

SECOND HALF
  • Bryant came out of the break looking to up its lead, as they sent four chances to start the second half, capped by an Emma Pedolzky attempt.
  • She challenged freshman keeper, Sam Hughes, to the left, but Hughes was able to win the battle and deny the opportunity.
  • Midway through the stanza, Wagner senior midfielder, Gabby Cipriano, found a seam in the Bulldogs defense and lofted a shot on target but McNeil was there to turn the chance aside.
  • One of the pivotal points of the match came in the 63rd minute as Pedolzky found herself with an opportunity to put her team ahead by two, but the Seahawks' defense stood tall and cleared the attempt away from the net.
  • Wagner seized the momentum and got the game-tying score in the 74th minute as Barbosa sent the free kick into the box that cleared over a Bulldog defender and past a waiting McNeil to even the match at 1-1.
  • For the second-year Seahawk, it was her first collegiate goal.
  • With a little over 12 minutes showing on the game clock, the Seahawks were looking to notch the go-ahead score as senior tri-captain Luisa Barone was able to break free of her defender and fire off a shot attempt but McNeil came through for Bryant, preventing the score.
  • With five minutes to go, Bryant had one more chance before the teams were destined for overtime as Bean sent one net, but a pair of Seahawk defenders were once again there to clear the chance out of harm's way.

OVERTIME
  • In the first overtime session, Bryant took control, sending a trio of chances, with the last coming with just a minute left to go as Pedolzky fired a shot that Hughes was able to stop.
  • In the second overtime, the visitors wasted little time, as Cipriano tested McNeil in the 102nd but her attempt was corralled by the Bulldogs' netminder.
  • Bryant was called for a foul, which set the stage for the Seahawks as Barbosa sent one into the box that junior forward Madison Carr was able to locate and in one motion put a shot on target.
  • McNeil was able to punch the ball out; however, Manzella was able to locate the loose ball and booted one past the keeper giving Wagner its second straight Northeast Conference (NEC) victory.
