Women's Soccer Posts 1-0 Victory In Home Finale On Thursday

Staten Island, NY – In the final home match of their Wagner careers, the combo of seniors Luisa Barone and Gabby Cipriano propelled the Seahawks to a 1-0 victory over the Saint Francis U Red Flash on Thursday evening.

With the win, the Green & White moves to 7-10-0 overall and 4-5 in Northeast Conference (NEC) action. The Red Flash falls to 4-11-1 and 2-6-1 in league contests.

HIGHLIGHTS...

FIRST HALF...
  • The Seahawks controlled the tempo from the opening whistle, as Barone wasted little time in firing off a shot that found the arms of SFU's Emma Sawich, two minutes into the contest.
  • Junior tri-captain Annie White followed up with a shot attempt, but her chance sailed high over the goal.
  • Classmate Madison Carr rocked a pair of attempts that Sawich was able to turn aside to keep the Seahawks off-the-board.
  • The Red Flash strung together a trio of chances over the next five minutes, but all three attempts weren't on target.
  • The visitors' first chance to test freshman goalkeeper, Sam Hughes, came in the 36' as Rhiallie Jessell headed the ball on net after teammate Lauren Pyle crossed it in from the corner. Hughes was able to make the stop, preserving the stalemate.

SECOND HALF...
  • Similar to the start of the first half, it was Barone that kick-started the Wagner offense, as she booted a left-footed chance that was tipped away by Sawich, giving the Seahawks a corner kick opportunity.
  • Sophomore Kayla Barbosa was able to launch the ball that found its way to Cipriano, who alertly sent on goal but Sawich was able to make the save.
  • With just 13 minutes left in regulation, Wagner was rewarded with the first goal of the match.
  • Cipriano lined up for the corner kick on the left side and struck the ball into the box to a waiting Barone, who was able to push past Sawich in giving the Seahawks a 1-0 advantage.
  • For Barone, it marked her second goal of the season and fifth for her career while Cipriano registered her second career helper and first of the season.
  • The tenacious Green & White defense yielded just two shot attempts the rest of the way as Hughes recorded her second clean sheet of the year.
