New Britain, CT - The Wagner College women's soccer team fell to the defending Northeast Conference (NEC) champions, Central Connecticut, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon.
With the loss, the Seahawks move to 6-10-0 overall and 3-5-0 in league play while the Blue Devils move to 10-5-0 and 7-2-0 in conference action.
FIRST HALF
- The Green & White had the first chance of the match as junior Madison Carr sent a shot attempt, but it sailed to the left of the net.
- On the next Blue Devils possession, Erica Bardes was able to find some space at the top of the box and booted the ball, but it sailed high over the net.
- CCSU continued to apply pressure and was able to capitalize in the 24th minute.
- Kelly Brady sent a cross that found the foot of Abbey Chase inside the box and Chase was able to push one past Wagner freshman goalkeeper, Sam Hughes, as the Blue Devils went ahead, 1-0.
- The Seahawks had a chance in the 36th minute as junior tri-captain Annie White was able to head the ball towards the net, but it curved to the right at the last moment.
SECOND HALF
- The Blue Devils opened the second half looking to build upon its lead but Hughes was up to the task of denying them.
- In the 52nd, Brady was looking to add a goal to her ledger as she sent a header that found Hughes' arms.
- Two minutes later, Bardes blasted a shot that Hughes was ready for, keeping the match to a one-score contest.
- Wagner had two chances in the final minutes of the match as in the 82nd minute, Carr sent a shot on target, but that was turned away by Amanda McQuillan.
- Following a free-kick for the Seahawks, Carr was able to spot the ball on the right side and settle it before rocketing a shot that hit the post.
- Junior tri-captain Maddie Wilde found a seam within the CCSU defense and fired a shot but McQuillan was there for the stop as the Blue Devils held on for the win.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
- Wagner was outshot by Central Connecticut, 27-6, with the Blue Devils sending 11 shots on goal to the Seahawks three.
- Carr finished with a team-high three shot attempts.
- For the second time in her Seahawk career, Hughes recorded double-digit stops, as she was credited with ten on the afternoon. Her counterpart, McQuillan, finished with three.
SERIES NOTEBOOK
- Wagner falls to 1-26-1 all-time against CCSU and has lost the eight meetings against the Blue Devils.
