Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College women's soccer team produced two second-half goals over a three minute span as the Seahawks defeated the LIU Sharks, 2-0, on Sunday evening at Hameline Field on Senior Night.
With the win, the Seahawks move to 6-9-0 overall and 3-4-0 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play. Wagner currently sits in sixth place, one point out of the fourth and final playoff spot behind Sacred Heart and Howard, each with ten points.
LIU drops to 2-8-2 overall and 2-4-1 in league contests and is now in tenth in the league standings.
Highlights
Senior Night
- Before the start of tonight's contest between Wagner and LIU, the Seahawks recognized their 2021 Senior Class of midfielder Gabby Cipriano and tri-captain, Luisa Barone.
FIRST HALF
- The Sharks were able to record the first shot of the contest midway through the stanza as Sarah Borer launched a chance but misfired as the shot went left of the goal.
- On Wagner's next possession, Cipriano was able to create space on the right side and fire off a shot but went right of the net.
- With ten minutes remaining before halftime, Barone was in a position to send on towards the net but misfired as it went left.
- The visitors had a chance in the final minutes of the first as Hikari Yamada tested freshman goalkeeper, Sam Hughes, but Hughes was up to the task and deny her the scoring chance on the diving stop.
- With 30 seconds showing on the game clock, Gabbi Leach unleashed a chance but her shot went wide as both teams entered the locker room tied at 0-0
SECOND HALF
- When play resumed for the second half, Wagner created the early chances as Barone rocketed one off a Shark defender in the 49th.
- Four minutes later, Barone had received the ball in the middle, just above the box, and fired one that found the arms of LIU's Kayla DeTreux.
- The Sharks nearly scored the first goal of the match in the 55th as Yamada bent the ball from the left corner that Kendra Oldroyd was able to leap in the air and head the ball, but her attempt sailed high over the goal.
- LIU was called for a foul in the 78th minute. Sophomore Kayla Barbosa lined up for the free-kick from about 40 yards away.
- The Lake Hopatcong, NJ was able to send a left-footed strike deep into the box that was headed in by LIU's Grace Cagnina as the Seahawks went ahead, 1-0, on the own goal.
- The Green & White continued to apply pressure as freshman Emma Roe blasted a shot on goal in the 81st minute that was turned away by DeTreux.
- Barbosa lined up for a corner that was sent into the box. Junior tri-captain Annie White was able to settle the ball, but her shot attempt was blocked.
- Junior Isabella Manzella was able to locate the loose ball, but her chance was also blocked before Madison Carr was able to stuff one past DeTreux as Wagner increased its lead to 2-0 and hold on for the victory.
- For Carr, it is her eighth goal of the season.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
- Both teams finished with ten shots in the contest with Wagner firing off six shots on goal to LIU's two.
- DeTreux was credited with four saves in the contest, three of which coming in the second half. Hughes made two stops.
- With Carr's eighth goal, she moves into a tie for fifth-place on the single-season goal scorers list with Julie Vigliotti, who netted eight back in 2010.
SERIES NOTEBOOK
- Wagner is now 3-1-1 in their last five meetings against LIU and 5-7-1 all-time at Hameline Field.
