West Long Branch, NJ – The Wagner College women's tennis team put forth a valiant effort at Monmouth on Friday afternoon, but was defeated, 5-2, at the Outdoor Tennis Complex on the campus of Monmouth University.
The match was tight from the start; as all three doubles matches needed a tiebreaker set to determine which team claimed the doubles point.
The Seahawk pairing of
Gabrielle Perraudin and
Tara Dakic edged out Ann Spurka and Nicole Gasser, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 1. Monmouth was able to get on the board at No. 3 as Zoe Klapman and Jo Pax just got by the duo of
Fidan Khalilzade and
Paula Ysabelle Yu, 7-6 (7-4), setting up the deciding match at No. 2.
Wagner had
Alegra d'Alessandro and
Mia Groetsch take on Madison Mills and Lauren Landstrom. After both teams rallied throughout the match, it was Mills and Landstrom who were able to claim the point for the Hawks, as they earned a 7-6 (7-5) win.
Khalilzade earned her 22nd career singles win as she defeated Spurka, 6-3; 6-2, at No. 1 singles to tie the match at 1-1.
Perraudin followed up with her fifth career singles victory, besting Gasser, 6-1; 6-3 at No. 2 singles which gave the Seahawks a 2-1 advantage.
Monmouth rallied back in capturing wins at No. 3, No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 to claim the match.
The Seahawks conclude the weekend on Saturday afternoon when they will take on St. Francis Brooklyn in Northeast Conference (NEC) action.
