Women's Hoops Pushes No. 1 Seed Robert Morris To The Limit; Falling 65-61 In Overtime In NEC Quarterfinals

Moon Township, PA - Opening up postseason action, the No. 8 seeded Wagner College women's basketball team pushed top-seeded Robert Morris to the limit on Monday evening in the Northeast Conference (NEC) quarterfinals.

The Seahawks led by four, 54-50, with under five minutes remaining in regulation but the defending champions sparked an 11-2 run over the next eight minutes as the Seahawks came up short in overtime by a 65-61 count.

Redshirt senior guard Janelle Mullen and junior Khaleah Edwards each hit for 17 points while the duo combined to make six of Wagner's eight three-pointers on the evening.

Freshman guard Drayah Heyward scored a career-high 10 points on 4 of 6 shooting from the field while grabbing five rebounds in 18 minutes of action.

All-NEC First Team selection, Emilija Krista Grava, was limited to just six points but corralled a team-high seven rebounds while swatting away two shots.

Robert Morris had three players score in double-figures, led by All-NEC First Teamer, Nneka Ezeigbo, who finished with 16 points and notched a double-double with 12 rebounds.

Irekpitan Ozzy-Momodu, who was named to the All-NEC Second Team earlier today, added 13 points and eight rebounds. Isabella Posset, a Third-Team All-NEC selection, rounded out the scoring with ten points.

  • Season Series - Wagner 0 | Robert Morris 3

How It Happened:
First Quarter
  • Both teams were able to match one another early in the stanza before the Seahawks started to create some separation as Mullen was the catalyst for the Wagner offense.
  • Edwards hit two from the line in giving Wagner a slim 9-8 edge.
  • Following a two minute scoreless drought, Ozzy-Momodu put in her first points off-the-feed from Posset but was quickly answered by a Mullen pull-up jumper.
  • The Seahawks continued to build on the momentum as Dailey was able to thread the needle in finding Heyward on a layup that pushed Wagner ahead, 13-10, with under a minute left in the quarter.
  • Ozzy-Momodu kept the Colonials close after making the front-end of a two-shot foul.
  • With just three seconds left before the close of the quarter, Edwards was able to put one off the window as the visitors held a 15-11 lead.

Second Quarter
  • RMU's Megan Callahan opened the quarter with a jumper before Krista Grava answered back for two on the opposite end.
  • Following a pair of free-throws from Ezeigbo, the Seahawks outscored the Colonials, 9-4, over the next 3:34 in taking its largest lead of the game, 26-19, as freshman Katrice Jackson used a well-timed post-move en route to scoring two.
  • The defending league champions fought their way back on the strength of a 7-0 run in tying the game at 26 after a made basket from Esther Castedo.
  • Mullen concluded the period with another triple as the Seahawks entered the break leading 29-26.

Third Quarter
  • Nearly a minute into the quarter, Mullen once again registered one from the outside as the Seahawks led 32-26.
  • The Colonials continued to fight back outscoring the Green & White, 9-2, over the next four minutes in retaking the lead, 35-34, thanks to an Ozzy-Momodu layup.
  • The run was part of a larger 17-7 outburst as Ozzy-Momodu muscled her way inside to give the Colonials a 43-36 lead with 2:07 showing on the clock.
  • Wagner fought back valiantly, scoring six of the final ten points of the third, with one of the biggest shots coming from Dailey, as she heaved it from approximately 52-feet out and banked in off-the-window as Wagner was down five, 47-42.

Fourth Quarter
  • Following the celebration to close out the third, the Seahawks carried that momentum with them to the fourth, as Wagner scored five straight in tying the game at 47 after Edwards was able to hit from the corner.
  • The two traded baskets as Honoka Ikematsu connected from the outside but Heyward was able to answer back on the opposite end.
  • Krista Grava put the Seahawks ahead by one, 51-50, before Edwards found her rhythm from the outside, hitting a critical three that gave the visitors a four-point lead, 54-50, with 4:48 left to go.
  • Ozzy-Momodu was fouled and made one of two from the charity stripe, bringing the Wagner advantage down to three, 54-51.
  • Robert Morris had a pair of chances late but was sent to the line with 2:48 left as Ezeigbo only converted the front end.
  • An ill-advised turnover by Wagner gave the ball back to Colonials with 2:1
  • Posset was foul but, subsequently, missed both attempts as Edwards was able to track down the loose ball.
  • On the ensuing Wagner possession, two straight misfires kept the Colonials alive as Ezeigbo grabbed the rebound and Robert Morris called for time with just 1:20 to play in regulation.
  • When play resumed, the gritty Seahawk defense was able to get the turnover it needed, as Natalie Villaflor coughed up the ball with Mullen recovering and calling for time with 46 seconds on the game clock.
  • Krista Grava missed on a baseline jumper and the ball was tracked down by Castedo but again, Wagner's defense was in the right place at the right time, forcing another turnover and calling a timeout as 24 seconds trimmed off the clock.
  • The Colonials fouled Dailey, who, like Posset, missed on her chance from the line and Robert Morris burning their final timeout with 14 seconds showing.
  • Off the inbounds, Nina Augustin was able to drive on the right-hand side and lay it up in tying the score at 54.
  • The Seahawks turned it over on their next possession and the ball found the hands of Ikematsu, whose shot at the buzzer hit the backboard as the quarterfinal matchup was headed for overtime.

Overtime
  • In the extra session, Augustin gave RMU the first lead after connecting at the free-throw line.
  • Heyward scored for the Seahawks but Castedo followed right back with a jumper to reclaim the lead for RMU, 58-56.
  • Wagner had a chance for the game-tying bucket but Edwards missed on three straight shot attempts before Holly Forbes grabbed the ball for Robert Morris.
  • Ezeigbo was able to plant in the paint and convert the traditional, three-point play, as the Colonials increased the lead to 61-56 at the 1:22 mark of overtime.
  • Wagner needed just 11 seconds to get back in the contest as Edwards made her third triple of the evening, cutting the lead down to two, 61-59, with 71 seconds remaining.
  • Morgan Lenahan was able to rip the ball away from Ezeigbo but Wagner couldn't convert on the other end as Villaflor corralled the rebound.
  • Augustin came up big for the No. 1 seed, as she hit a mid-range jumper that pushed the lead to 63-59 with just 15 seconds left.
  • Freshman guard Alex Cowan was able to race down the court and bank one off-the-glass, bringing the Seahawks to within two, 63-61, and forcing RMU to call for time.
  • Needing to get the ball back, Wagner fouled Augustin, who sank both freebies to increase the lead to four.
  • Wagner had one last shot as Mullen tossed up a three-pointer with a Colonial defender nearby but her attempt was off-the-mark as the Seahawks couldn't complete the near upset.

Inside The Boxscore
  • Wagner outscored Robert Morris, 15-11, in the first quarter and 12-7 in the fourth.
  • The Seahawks were held to just 2 of 11 shooting in the third quarter while the Colonials scored 21 points on 7 of 17 shooting.
  • RMU won the battle on the boards, outmuscling the Seahawks 45-34.
  • The Seahawks forced 25 Colonial turnovers and only scored 12 points off those mishaps while Robert Morris forced 22 Wagner turnovers and scored 20 points.
  • RMU outscored Wagner, 15-2, on second-chance opportunities despite the Seahawks dishing out more assists (12-10) and recording more steals (10-6).
  • Despite the outcome, Wagner is the only NEC team this season to lose to the Colonials by five points or fewer, as back on January 11, the Seahawks dropped a 51-47 decision at UMPC Events Center and tonight's decision, 65-61, in overtime.
