Hat Tricks By Drum & Kerstetter Not Enough As Women's Lacrosse Falls In Season Opener To Vanderbilt

Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College women's lacrosse team put forth a valiant effort against Vanderbilt on Sunday afternoon with the Seahawks holding a two-goal lead twice in the second half before the Commodores rallied back for a 14-11 win.

This afternoon marked the season opener for both squads.

Leading the way for the defending Northeast Conference (NEC) champions on the afternoon was graduate Megan Drum and junior Erin Kerstetter, who each notched hat-tricks while combining for nine draw controls. Sophomore Kasey Dorney scored a pair of goals while scooping five ground balls and causing two turnovers for Wagner.

Gabby Fornia led the Vanderbilt attack with a game-high four goals and posting five points in the win. Brianne Gross and Mikayla McCauley recorded hat tricks for the visitors.

Wagner sophomore netminder, Lauren DiStefano stopped 12 shots, corralled five ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers. Her counterpart, Paige Gunning, made ten stops in net for the visitors.

Dorney scored the first goal of the season for the Green & White after receiving the feed from junior Stefani Peluso.  Vanderbilt responded with three unanswered goals from Gwyn Devin, Gross, and Fornia.

Kerstetter was able to answer back as she found the back of the net for the first time in the contest, cutting the deficit to 3-2 before Dorney cashed in on her second tally to knot the game at 3-3. Two quick scores by Callie Sundin and Fornia upped the visitors lead by two, 5-3.

Madeline Seims's goal with 9:31 left in the opening stanza sparked a Seahawk run, in which Wagner converted three scores, all coming from Drum, in retaking the lead at 7-5, with 1:37 remaining before the intermission. Before the first half came to a close, McCauley was able to blast one past the Seahawk keeper as Vanderbilt headed to the locker rooms trailing by one, 7-6.

Similar to the opening half, it was the Seahawks who struck first coming out of halftime, as Kerstetter found the back of the cage for the second time, creating a two-goal lead for the Green & White.

After Vanderbilt cut its deficit back to one, Wagner surged ahead 9-7 after the reigning NEC Midfielder of the Year, Kerstetter, notched the hat trick with 20:53 showing on the game clock.  Vanderbilt climbed back into the game, rattling off three more goals in regaining the lead, 10-9, after another score from McCauley.

With an assist to Victoria Tucci, Peluso tied the game at 10-10 with her first of the season.

The go-ahead goal from the Commodores came with just 10:20 left to play in regulation as Sundin was able to capitalize off-the-fee from Cassidy Orban that gave the Commodores an 11-10 advantage. Emily Mathewson put Vanderbilt ahead by two but was answered back in the form of a Maria Henwood goal as the Seahawks trailed by one, 12-11, with six and half minutes left to play.

It would be the closest Wagner would get as McCauley and Fornia added to their goals totals as Vanderbilt escaped Grymes Hill with a three-goal win.

Beyond the Numbers:
  • Drum's hat trick gave her 40 goals for her career.
  • Seims extended her goal-scoring streak to 21 straight games, having scored in all 20 games during the 2019 season.
  • The starting defensive unit of sophomore Aileen Hannan and seniors Giaci Vitolo, Isabel Glace and Lindsay Haas combined for five ground balls and six caused turnovers.

Wagner's season-opening four-game home-stand continues next Saturday, February 15, at 1 PM against the Quinnipiac University Bobcats from Hameline Field.
