Krista Grava's Game-High 35 Points Not Enough As Wagner Falls To Central Connecticut, 66-63

Box Score (PDF) | Box Score (HTML)

New Britain, CT - With just 22 seconds remaining in regulation, Wagner sophomore forward Emilija Krista Grava put the visitors ahead by one, but Central Connecticut State University made each of its final four free-throw attempts down the stretch while keeping Wagner off the scoreboard as the Seahawks fell to the Blue Devils, 66-63, on Saturday afternoon.

Krista Grava led all scorers with 35 points on 12-of-17 shooting from the field while hitting on all ten attempts from the charity stripe.  The second-year forward also corralled a game-high seven rebounds in 38 minutes of play.

Junior combo guard Khaleah Edwards joined Krista Grava in double-figures, finishing with ten points on 4-of-8 shooting in 34 minutes of action.

Ashley Forker led the way for the Blue Devils, converting 7-of-10 from the floor, making all six of her free throw attempts en route to a team-high 23 points.  Ashley Berube and Emma McCamus each tallied 12 points apiece on a combined 7 of 19 shooting from the field with Berube netting half of her points from the free-throw line.

  • Series History: CCSU now leads the head-to-head series, 27-17

How It Happened:
First Quarter
  • Following an Ashley Chin jumper in the paint, the Seahawks rattled off five straight points, with Edwards hitting her first three-pointer of the afternoon for Wagner's first field goal of the contest.

  • Krista Grava finished the frame with 10 points, including the Seahawks' last six points of the quarter as the visitors held a 17-12 advantage.

  • Wagner held CCSU to just 3-of-13 shooting in the opening period, but the Blue Devils did remain in the game early thanks to a 6 of 6 showing from the free-throw line.

Second Quarter
  • The Blue Devils opened the second quarter on a 6-0 run in taking an 18-17 lead before redshirt senior guard Janelle Mullen dialed it up from the outside.
  • The Seahawks built its lead to six, 24-18, following a pair of makes from the line from senior forward Jordan Hobson
  • Chin's jumper at the 6:43 mark of the quarter was part of a larger 16-2 run by the Blue Devils, as they took a 35-26 lead into the break.
  • Krista Grava's fast-break with 3:18 left to go before the break was the lone made field goal, as Wagner went 0 for 5 before the intermission.
  • The Seahawks finished the quarter shooting 3-of-8 from the floor while Central Connecticut hit on a blistering 64.3 percent from the field (9 for 14).

Third Quarter
  • CCSU scored twice over the first two minutes of the third quarter in taking its largest lead of the game, 39-26, following a runner in the paint from Forker.
  • The Green & White clawed their way back, cutting the deficit down to four, 49-45, after outscoring CCSU 19-10 over eight minutes.
  • Krista Grava continued her dominance, netting 13 points in the period while converting 8-of-8 from the line despite the team being held to just 4 for 13 shooting from the floor.

Fourth Quarter
  • Wagner trimmed the deficit down to two on three occasions, the last coming after Krista Grava put in two more from the free-throw line.
  • Forker responded with a three on the next Blue Devils' possession, and McCamus followed with a pair of freebies that increased the home team's lead to seven, 60-53, with 5:25 showing on the game clock.
  • Redshirt junior guard Morgan Lenahan made the front-end of a two-shot foul before Krista Grava added two more in the paint for her 33rd point of the contest and cut Central's lead to 60-56, with 3:53 left.
  • The Blue Devils were able to corral three offensive boards over 45 seconds before McCamus hit on a jumper from just inside the left elbow that brought the lead back up to six, 62-56.
  • Wagner freshman, Alex Cowan, was able to bank home a high-lofting attempt that forced the home team to call for time.
  • Following the timeout, Edwards was able to wrestle the ball away from CCSU's Bruna Vila Artigues and was the beneficiary of the pass from Krista Grava as Edwards hit on a triple in front of her bench to bring Wagner within one, 62-61.
  • Central Connecticut couldn't get into their offense and was called for a shot-clock violation, giving the ball back to the Green & White with just 38 ticks left.
  • When play resumed following a Wagner timeout, Edwards missed fired on a three but the ball remained with Wagner.
  • Lenahan inbounded the ball to the left of the team's basket with 24 seconds left in regulation.
  • Krista Grava rolled into the paint following a well-timed screen from Hobson, as Krista Grava grabbed it just above the NEC logo in the paint and made her way toward the goal.
  • The second-year Latvian forward was able to bank one off-the-glass as CCSU called for time and the Wagner bench went into a frenzy.
  • Up one now with just 14 seconds, Berube got fouled and made both of her attempts from the line, giving the lead back to Central, 64-63.
  • Wagner burned its final timeout.
  • When the ball was inbounded, Dailey picked up her dribble along the left-wing and was called for traveling.
  • The Seahawks were forced to foul as Forker made the two freebies, putting the Blue Devils up three, 66-63.
  • Cowan raced down the length of the court and was able to spot Mullen atop of the key but her chance hit the front iron as the Blue Devils escaped with the three-point win.

Postgame Comments:
Wagner head coach, Heather Jacobs
Opening Statement
" Give Central Connecticut credit they played hard. Unfortunately, this afternoon we didn't take care of business... As a group, we didn't rebound the ball, in which we gave them (CCSU) three looks at the rim at a high point of the game... We put ourselves in a bad spot and attempted to climb back... We would get a stop but couldn't capitalize on it... We need to just sharpen up, clean up on the rebounds and take care of the basketball."

Next Up:
  • Wagner concludes its two-game New England tour on Monday, January 27, as the Seahawks head to Smithfield, RI to take on Bryant University at 7:00 p.m.
