Lawrenceville, NJ – The Wagner College women's soccer team, who scored the game's first goal a minute into the contest, fell to the Rider University Broncs, 3-2, in double overtime on Friday evening.

This evening's contest between the two programs marked the season opener for both squads.

The two teams combined for 27 shots, which included a total of 17 on target with Rider holding the advantage in both categories (21-6 in shots; 13-4 shots on goal).

A minute into the contest, the Green & White struck first in taking a 1-0 lead. Junior forward Lindsay Weiss sent a cross from the left of the goal line and following a scrum, graduate transfer midfielder, Mariana Jaramillo was able to get it past Rider's goalkeeper, Carmen Carbonell.

For Jaramillo, it marked her first goal as a member of the team after wrapping up a stellar four-year collegiate career at Iona College. For Weiss, the helper marked her first-ever assist.

The Broncs knotted the game at 1-1 in the 41st minute as Nikki Arrington received the feed from Niamh Cashin from the right wing. Arrington settled the ball on her right foot and put one past the outstretched reach of freshman goalkeeper, Erin Kelly.

Nearly a minute and a half later, Wagner went ahead, 2-1, after an own goal was awarded to the visitors with just three minutes left before the half.

Six minutes into the second half, Arrington booted a shot that deflected off a Seahawk player in the box, and alertly corralled the loose ball and was able to notch her second goal of the evening and, in the process, tying the score at 2-2.

For the second straight season, Wagner and Rider needed overtime to decide a winner. Both teams were held off the board in the first overtime period. In the 105th minute, Hailey Russell's shot hit the cross top of the cross and trickled behind Kelly's grasp, giving Rider the opening night victory.

Jaramillo led the way with three shots for the Green & White. Junior Mya Donnelly also added a shot on target. Kelly finished with nine saves in the contest. Her counterpart, Carbonell, ended the night with three stops.

Wagner will close out the first week of the 2019 regular season on Sunday afternoon, August 25, as the Seahawks welcome Delaware State for its home opener. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
