Staten Island, NY – The Wagner baseball team jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two innings and were still on top by a 2-1 count through five, before Central Connecticut pushed across three runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings in recording a 7-2 Northeast Conference (NEC) win on Friday afternoon at the Richmond County Bank Ballpark.

With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 15-25 on the season and 8-11 in NEC play while the Blue Devils improve to 19-18 overall and 9-7 in league, weathering a 40-minute rain delay in the process.

Wagner and CCSU will be back at it on Saturday these teams will close the series with a doubleheader, beginning at 12:00 p.m.

The Seahawks' two-run second inning began with a leadoff double by junior 3B Will Johnson, followed by an RBI single off the bat of sophomore DH Brandon Hall. With two outs and Hall still on the bag at first, junior catcher Johnny Kampes reached on an infield single to short putting runners on first and second. Senior SS Anthony Pecora then came through with an RBI double down the left field line, with Hall coming around to score to make it 2-0.
Junior LF Freddy Sabido then worked out a walk to load the bases but a potential big inning was quelled when senior CF Joe Silvestrone lined out to left. Wagner would not score again.

After rapping out four base hits in their second-inning rally, the Seahawks mustered just four more hits over the next 3.2 innings against Blue Devils' starter Tom Curtin. Mike Appel then came on in relief, not allowing a single hit in his 3.1 innings of work, en route to earning a save, as Curtin was the game's winning pitcher, evening his season record at 2-2.

Trailing 2-1 entering the fifth, CCSU put together its first of two consecutive three-run rallies. Dave Matthews started things off with a single to center, which was followed by a Buddy  Dewaine walk. Seahawk starter, senior Eric Ligda, then served up an RBI single to right off the bat of Peyton Stephens, tying the game at 2-2, with both runners moving up a base on the throw home.

Ligda then uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Dewaine to plate what would prove to be the winning run in making it 3-2. After inducing Chris Kainos to fly out to center for out number two, head coach Jim Carone brought in junior Justin Beyer who, while facing his first batter, threw a wild pitch as Stephens scampered home from third to extend CCSU's lead to 4-2.

After Wagner left a pair of runners on base in its half of the sixth, CCSU put together its second consecutive three-run inning. Aided by a fielding error at second base and another wild pitch, Dewaine came through with a one-out, two-run single to left in extending the Blue Devils' lead to 6-2.

Consecutive wild pitches allowed CCSU to tack on its final run of the game.

Ligda, who did manage seven strikeouts, was charged with the loss in falling to 0-4 on the season. He and Beyer combined to allow just seven hits but were undone by throwing three wild pitches apiece. Pecora had two hits and an RBI to lead Wagner offensively, while Kampes also had a 2-for-4 afternoon.

For CCSU, Dewaine went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a run.
