Bridgeport, CT – Trailing by an 11-4 count heading into the top of the ninth inning, the Wagner baseball team rallied for four runs to pull to within three but that's as close as the Seahawks would get as Sacred Heart held on for an 11-8 win, salvaging a split of today's doubleheader.
Wagner, which earned a 7-4 win in game one of today's twinbill, is now 8-18 on the season, 4-4 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play while the Pioneers improve to 10-18 and are also 4-4 in league.
These teams will play the final game of their three-game set on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
Sacred Heart got the scoring going in the nightcap of Saturday's doubleheader, taking a 3-0 lead after the first three frames. In the bottom of the second, Isiah Daubon worked a leadoff walk and Anthony Porrino sent a one-out single to left. Trevor Fagan was plunked by errant pitch. Justin Levito was credited with the RBI after walking.
In the bottom of the third, the Pioneers tacked on two more runs. Alex Perry reached on an infield bunt and moved into scoring position after a steal of second. With one out, Daubon connected on a two-run home run to right center.
Following a scoreless fourth, the Seahawks cut the Pioneers lead to one, 3-2, in the top of the fifth.
Tyler Sanfillippo walked to third on a bunt single from
Emil Matti as Sanfillippo advanced on the fielding error by the pitcher.
Ruggiero was hit by a pitch that loaded the bases for game one hero
Anthony Pecora. The senior infielder rolled into a 4-6-3 double play but Sanfillippo was able to score while Matti moved to third. The Seahawks scored their second run of the stanza on a wild pitch.
In the bottom of the fifth, Sacred Heart scored two more runs in building a 5-2 lead. The first run of the Pioneers' inning came in to score on a fielding error by the Seahawk first baseman before Danny Glendon singled and scored Porrino, upping the Pios lead to three runs.
SHU added single runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings in opening a 7-2 lead. Wagner got those two runs back in the top of the eighth to make it a 7-4 game on an RBI single by
Griffin Schneider, which drove in Silvestrone who had reached on a one-out single, followed by an unearned run.
The Pioneers then struck for four runs in the bottom of the eighth, seemingly taking command with an 11-4 lead, with the big blow coming on a three-run double by Glendon.
While Sacred Heart may have thought it had this game in hand, the Seahawks had other ideas in putting together a late rallying. Pecora led off the inning by reaching on a hit by pitch.
Freddy Sabido then doubled to put runners on second and third with no outs. Silvestrone grounded out to short for the first out of the inning as Pecora came on to score to make it 11-5.
Johnson then knocked in Sabido with an RBI single to make it an 11-6 game. After Schneider popped out to the catcher for out number two,
Brandon Hall reached on a single with Johnson advancing to third. With runners on the corners facing their final out, Sanfillipo came through with a two-run double, driving in Hall and Johnson to close the gap to 11-8. SHU then turned to its bullpen, calling on Jake Frasca, who induced Matti to ground out to short, ending the Seahawk rally and sealing the Sacred Heart win.
John Cerretani, who came on in the fourth to allow just to runs in three inning pitch was credited with the win, improving to 2-0 on the season, while Frasca picked up the save.
Neil Abbatiello, who gave up four earned runs and eight hits in six innings pitched, took the loss in falling to 1-3.
