Staten Island, NY – Madeline Seims poured in four goals, while
Erin Kerstetter,
Stefani Peluso and
Megan Drum each recorded hat tricks in leading the Wagner women's lacrosse team to a 19-10 win over LIU Brooklyn, giving the Seahawks a program-best 12
th regular season victory.
The previous single-season win record of 11 was set by the 2012 and 2018 Seahawk squads. The most overall single-season wins came in 2018 when the Green & White went 14-6, en route to winning the NEC title, followed by a first-round NCAA victory over Mercer. With its third consecutive win, Wagner improves to 12-3 and 5-1 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while the Blackbirds fall to 6-10 overall, 3-3 in league play.
Today's victory clinched Wagner a berth in next week's four-team NEC Championship as the No. 2 seed. With its 17-6 win over Sacred Heart today, Mount St. Mary's nailed down the NEC regular season title and home field advantage, with a 6-0 record, including an 11-9 win over the Seahawks. On Thursday, May 2, the second-seeded and defending NEC champion Seahawks will play whoever gains the No. 3 seed in one semifinal game, while the Mount will host the No. 4 seed in the other semi. The winners of Thursday's contests will then meet on Saturday 4 in the 2019 NEC Championship game.
The Green & White jumped out to an 8-0 halftime lead in this one and, while the Blackbirds fought back to make it an 11-5 game at the half, the Seahawks slammed the door by opening the second half on a 4-0 run, extending their lead to 15-5 en route to the 19-10 win.
In addition to her three goals, Kerstetter added three assists in notching a team-best six points on this damp, foggy day which forced a nearly hour and a half weather delay, as the scheduled 1:00 p.m. first draw was pushed back to 2:40 p.m. The sophomore midfielder also paced the Seahawks with seven draw controls, extending her single-season record to 92 DCs, along with a team-high five caused turnovers and five ground balls.
Seims, another sophomore midfielder, came up with six draw controls and five ground balls in addition to her four goals. Peluso wound up with four points on the day, as the sophomore attacker added an assist to her three-goal output. Others who found the scoring column for the Seahawks included junior attack
Stephanie Falcone (2g, 1a), sophomore midfielder
Victoria Tucci and senior attack
Stephanie Roberts (2g). Defensively, redshirt senior goalie
Kelsey Fee registered six saves.
LIU Brooklyn was led by Bianca Santucci and Rachel Masullo, who recorded three goals apiece.
Statistically, Wagner held the edge in shots (40-23) and ground balls (30-12), while the Blackbirds managed a slight 16-15 advantage in draw controls. On free-positon shots, Wagner was 4-of-6 while LIU was 2-of-5. The Blackbirds turned the ball over 21 times as compared to the 14 committed by the Seahawks.
