New Britain, CT – Megan Drum poured in a career-high seven goals, the most by a Seahawk in seven years,
Madeline Seims added four scores, and
Erin Kerstetter set the Seahawk record for draw controls in a season, en route to a dominant 17-6 victory at Central Connecticut on Saturday.
Since seeing their eight-game winning streak snapped last Sunday at Mount St. Mary's, the Green & White have now won two straight and improve to 11-3 on the season and 4-1 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play. In defeat, the Blue Devils fall to 2-12 overall and 0-6 in conference.
The 11 victories amassed by this year's team tie the 2012 and 2018 squads for the most regular season wins in program history. The most single-season wins overall came in 2018 when the Green & White went 14-6.
The seven goals scored by Drum bettered the senior attacker's previous career best of four, which she set back on March 24 vs. Presbyterian, and mark the most by a Seahawk since April 13, 2012 when
Carolyn Clark sank seven scores vs. Bryant.
On a cool, gray day at Arute Field this afternoon, Wagner scored early and often as the Seahawks surpassed the 15-goal mark for the seventh time this season. The first two goals of the game were scored by Seims, a sophomore midfielder, and when junior attacker
Stephanie Falcone and sophomore midfielder
Erin Kerstetter then found the net, Wagner had itself a 4-0 lead.
After Central got on the board with a Kaitlyn Rapp goal with 18:22 left in the half, the Seahawks answered with an 7-1 run, which included three straight by Drum, in galloping out to an 11-2 lead at the intermission.
After Rapp opened the second half with her second tally of the game, Wagner answered with three straight goals, two out of the stick of Drum, in making it a 14-3 game, and the Seahawks coasted from there.
In addition to the 11 goals combined by Dum and Seims, sophomore attacker
Stefani Peluso and Ketstetter, who also led Wagner with six draw controls, added two goals apiece. For Kerstetter, her six DCs give her 85 on the season, which passes the Seahawk previous single-season record of 83 set by
Erika Bulken in 2012. For good measure, the 5-2 midfielder added two assists and four ground balls on the afternoon, giving her a final stat line of two goals, two assists, six draw controls, and four ground balls.
Falcone was the Seahawks' top playmaker on the day. Working effectively for large portions of the game from behind the cage, the junior wound up with four assists on the day which, in addition to her one goal, gave the junior a five-point day. Also hitting the scoring column for Wagner was junior attacker
Sarah Fisher, a first-year Seahawk and transfer from the University of Vermont, who capped the day's scoring by scoring a goal at the 1:04 mark off an assist by freshman midfielder
Ally Turner.
Redshirt senior goalie
Kelsey Fee recorded four saves, and allowed just four goals, in 44:31 of action before freshman Laren DiStefano came on to finish out the game's final 15:29 in the cage.
Rapp's two goals paced CCSU while goalie Jackie Branthover registered 11 saves.
Statistically, the Seahawks held the advantage in shots (39-23) and draw controls (14-11), while the teams tied at 19-19 in draw controls.
The Seahawks will close out the 2019 regular season with home games vs. LIU Brooklyn on Friday, before meeting Sacred Heart in a Senior Day matchup on Sunday. The four-team NEC Championship, which will be hosted by the regular season champion, commences with two semifinal games on May 2, with the 2019 league title game set for May 4.
