Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College women's tennis team concluded the 2018-19 regular season with a 7-0 victory over Monmouth on Tuesday afternoon at the Wagner Tennis Courts.

With the win, the Seahawks finish the regular season with a 5-10 overall mark while Monmouth falls to 2-17.

Prior to the start of this afternoon's match, head coach Alex Petrone along with the rest of the Seahawk team recognized their lone senior, Rina Baynes, in a pre-match ceremony, in which fellow co-captain, Vedika Anand, eloquently spoke on behalf of her teammate Baynes.

Wagner swept through the doubles portion of the match in earning the first point as Anand/Baynes bested Sophia Fredriksson and Maria Ivanova, 6-1, at No. 1.  Sophomore Fidan Khalilzade and freshman Emma Reeves earned a 6-4 triumph at No. 2 over Nicole Gasser/Caroline Mattise. Fellow freshmen, Samantha Lugtu and Diana Pinzariu blanked Sydney Denardo/Zaynah Muhammad, 6-0.

In singles, Lugtu put Wagner ahead 2-0 after defeating Ivanova, 4-2, in No. 4 as Ivanova was forced to retire the match. Khalilzade earned a 6-3; 6-3 triumph over Rachel Rosenthal at No. 2 to put the Seahawks ahead, 3-0.

In what was the fitting end for the regular season, Baynes clinched the match for the Green & White at No. 3, as she defeated Fredriksson, 6-1; 6-1. For Baynes, it marked her 27th career singles win, who is now just one victory away from moving into a tie for second-place on the all-time career singles win list with former Seahawk, Brittany Frazza, who had 28 during her Seahawk career.

Reeves was victorious at No. 5 (6-2; 6-0) while Anand outlasted Gasser, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 1. Alegra d'Alessandro completed the sweep with a 6-2; 6-2 win at No. 6 over Mattise.

Wagner will now turn its attention to the upcoming 2019 Northeast Conference (NEC) Championship, as the Seahawks, who will be the No. 6 seed, will take on the No. 3 seeded, Bryant, on Thursday, April 18 at 12:30 p.m. from the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, NJ.
