New Haven, CT– With playoff positiong at-stake for the upcoming Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament, the Wagner men's tennis team snapped its six-match losing streak by defeating Sacred Heart, 5-2, on Friday evening on the campus of Yale University.
With the win, the Green & White moves to 6-9 on the season and 2-1 in league matches while the Pioneers fall to 6-12 and 3-2 in conference play.
The Seahawks earned the first point of the contest after taking two of three in doubles play as seniors
Ilya Kneppelhout and
Eric Poland got past Lucca Casalduc Pla and Bryan Einstoss, 7-5, at No. 2. Graduate
Lucas Gonzalez and NEC Player of the Week,
Dylan Walters, picked up a 6-3 win at No. 3 over Chris Sause and Francisco Del Valle.
In singles action, Gonzalez put the visitors ahead 2-0 after outlasting Pla, 6-2; 6-1, at No. 4 singles. SHU got on the board at No. 2 singles as William Wibmer edged Walters, 6-4; 6-2.
Kneppelhout bested Einstoss, 6-3; 6-2 in giving Wagner a 3-1 lead in the overall match and senior
Anatoliy Lashkul clinched the match for the Seahawks, defeating Seiji Hosokowa, 7-6; 7-6 (7-6).
Wagner closes out the 2018-19 regular season on Monday, April 15, as they host Concordia College (NY) on Senior Day, as the Seahawks will recognize its five seniors:
Lucas Gonzalez,
Ilya Kneppelhout,
Anatoliy Lashkul,
Eric Poland and
Dale Sandy.
