Charlottesville, VA – Trailing 14-4 after the first three innings, the Wagner College baseball team was able to hold the University of Virginia Cavaliers scoreless over the next three frames before staging a five-run rally over the seventh and eighth inning but wasn't enough to complete the comeback as the Cavaliers tacked on four runs in the bottom of the eighth to defeat the Seahawks, 18-9, in the series finale on Wednesday afternoon.

With the loss, Wagner falls to 1-10 on the season while Virginia moves to 7-5.

Seven of the nine batters for the Seahawks recorded a hit in today's finale, led by junior LF Freddy Sabido, who finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored. He, along with sophomore catcher Brandon Hall (2-for-5), and RF Ben Montenegro (1-for-5, run scored) each had two RBIs in the contest. Senior 3B Will Johnson also had a multi-hit game, going 2-of-6 with a run scored.

Sophomore RHP Kevin Wiseman was pegged with the loss (0-1), allowing six runs on three hits while walking five. Junior Nick Robino and sophomore Nick LePre came on in relief and combined in allowing just one run over the next five frames while striking out three batters.

Brendan Rivoli led the way for Virginia with three hits while he, Cameron Simmons, and Tanner Morris each scored three runs apiece. Five Cavaliers finished with two hits while Simmons and Zack Gelof each drove in four RBIs.

Wagner struck for the game's first run in the top of the first. Senior SS Anthony Pecora reached when Simmons dropped the ball in the outfield. Pecora came around to score when Sabido ripped a single through the right side to give the visitors the early advantage. The junior left fielder moved to second on a single by senior CF Joe Silvestrone.

With one, junior 1B Tyler Sanfillippo worked a five-pitch walk that loaded the bases. With pitch count at 3-1, Hall lofted a pop fly to centerfield, which allowed Sabido to tag up from third and come in for Wagner's second run of the game.

Virginia erupted for a total of six runs in the bottom of the first, with the tying scores coming on two straight walks. Alex Tappen gave UVA a 4-2 lead with his two-run single to center before Gelof cleared the bases with an RBI single to make it 6-2.

The Cavaliers tacked on five more in the second to take an 11-2 lead. The visitors were able to get two back in the top of the third as both Sabido and Silvestrone walked before moving into scoring position on Johnson's groundout. Sanfillippo singled to right and Hall reached on an infield hit to short to chip into the lead, 11-4. Virginia added three more in its half of the third in taking a 14-4 advantage Simmons connected on a three-run homer to left center.

The score remained the same until the top of the seventh, when Sabido came through for the Green & White, as he sent a single up-the-middle that scored Dario Anderson that made it 14-5. The momentum carried over into the eighth, as Wagner tacked on four more scores, cutting the Cavaliers lead to 14-9. Johnson led off with a double. UVA's Grant Donahue was able to retire the next two batters before issuing walks to Anderson and sophomore 2B Mike Ruggiero that loaded the bases.

Down in the count, Montenegro was able to come through, cutting the lead in half, 14-7, on a two-run single to right. Ruggiero came in to score on a wild pitch before Pecora doubled to right center in bringing home Montenegro that made it 14-9.

Back-to-back singles and a walk started the bottom of the frame for UVA. Drew Hamrock took Koby Bishop's 1-2 pitch down the left field line for two bases in scoring a pair. Jack Dragum plated home Gelof on a RBI grounder to short. Cayman Richardson sent an RBI single to left center field which doubled up the score in favor of Virginia.

The Seahawks will return back to the Empire State and travel up to Stony Brook for a three-game series, beginning on March 9 with a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m.
