Seahawks Fall To Robert Morris On Saturday Afternoon

Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College women's basketball team was defeated by the Robert Morris University Colonials, 77-57, on Saturday afternoon at the Spiro Sports Center.
 
With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 10-17 overall and 8-8 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play with two conference games still remaining on the schedule. The Colonials improve to 18-9 overall and 15-1 in league contests, securing the outright regular season title in the process.

In a look at a updated NEC Standings, Wagner is currently tied for the fifth spot with Mount St. Mary's, as both teams are tied at 8-8, but the Mountaineers are ahead of the Seahawks, as Mount St. Mary's is 14-13 overall. These two teams split its season series.

Junior forward Jordan Hobson was the lone Seahawk in double-figures on Saturday, as she finished with ten points on 3-of-6 shooting from the field, while hitting on 2-of-4 from the outside. For Hobson, she extended her streak to 14 games with at least one made three-pointer.
 
Senior point guard Nakylia Carter scored all nine of her points from the free-throw, going 9-of-10 from the charity stripe in 36 minutes. The Oklahoma City, OK native, who will be recognized on Monday evening during Wagner's Senior Night ceremony, dished out a team-leading four helpers in her 36 minutes of action.
 
Redshirt sophomore Taylah Simmons and redshirt junior guard Janelle Mullen were held to eight points apiece on a combined 6-of-14 shooting from the floor. Freshman forward, Emilija Krista Grava, returned to the floor after missing time due to injury, as the first-year Seahawk finished with seven points, four rebounds, a team-best three steals and two blocks in 16 minutes of action. Classmate Enas Nigatu contributed four points and a team-high five rebounds in 21 minutes of play.
 
The Colonials had three players net in double digits, led by Nneka Ezeigbo's game-high 20 points, in which she converted on 9-of-13 shooting from the floor to go along with five rebounds. Irekpitan Ozzy-Momodu was a rebound shy of posting a double-double, tallying 16 points and nine rebounds on 6-of-10 shooting in 23 minutes. Isabella Posset added 14 points in her 28 minutes of play.
 
Wagner took its only lead of the contest when Hobson delivered the first bucket of the contest for the Green & White, a three-pointer off the feed from Carter. From there, the Colonials outscored the Seahawks, 24-12, over the next 6:25 in building a 25-15 advantage before closing out the first quarter on a mini 7-3 spurt that gave the visitors a 32-18 lead.
 
The visitors opened the second quarter with back-to-back buckets to increase its lead to 18, 36-18, before the Seahawks started to chip into the deficit, as sophomore guard Alayshia Dailey rattled off the next five points for Wagner, as they trailed, 36-23, with 6:49 left to go before halftime. A 13-5 RMU run closed out the quarter as the Colonials led, 49-28, at the break.
 
Wagner was resilient in the third quarter, as sophomore Khaleah Edwards provided a spark to open the stanza, drilling a three-pointer before taking it strong to the hoop. For the quarter, the Seahawks outscored RMU, 19-15, as the home team converted on 66.7 percent of its shots during the third while limiting RMU to just 33.3 percent from the field and three-point range. Carter, Simmons and Edwards accounted for 18 of the 19 points in the frame.
 
To begin the fourth, Mullen was able to create a scoring chance with a crafty scoop layup that trimmed the RMU lead to 15, 64-49, but it would be the closets that the Seahawks found themselves, as the Colonials outscored Wagner, 13-8, over a 6:45 stretch in leaving Staten Island with the victory.
 
For the contest, Wagner shot 44.7 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from beyond-the-arc while RMU converted at a 47.5 percent clip from the floor and also shot 33.3 percent from three-point range. The Colonials outmuscled the Seahawks, 34-25, on the glass, including an 18-7 edge on the offensive side.
 
Of Robert Morris' 77 points, 38 were accounted from inside-the-paint while turning 28 Seahawk mishaps into 22 points. The Colonials were opportunistic on second chance points, holding a 21-7 edge.
 
The Seahawks closeout its regular season home slate on Monday, March 4, at 7:00 p.m. as they welcome defending league champions, Saint Francis U, to the Spiro Sports Center. Monday is also Senior Night, as the Seahawks will recognize the 2019 Senior Class.
