Box Score
Brooklyn Heights, NY – St. Francis Brooklyn guard Glenn Sanabria knocked down a three-point jumper from the top of the key with the shot clock winding down and 25 seconds left to play, in giving the Terriers a 47-44 lead and an eventual 51-44 win over Wagner on Thursday.
With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 10-12 on the season, 5-6 in the Northeast Conference (NEC), while SFC improves to 14-10 overall, 6-5 in league play.
Tonight's defeat spoiled a terrific defensive performance by the Seahawks, headed by redshirt senior center
AJ Sumbry, who matched his season high with four blocked shots, to go with 10 points and six rebounds.
Redshirt senior guard
Romone Saunders, despite a tough shooting night, paced Wagner offensively with 11 points, marking the 21
st consecutive game that he has hit for double figures. Freshman guard
Jonathan Norfleet continued his fine offensive output with eight points and is now averaging 11.3 points over the last three games.
Senior guard
Elijah Davis added seven points for the Seahawks who were without the services of starting sophomore point guard
Chase Freeman who was shaken in last Saturday's win over defending NEC champion LIU Brooklyn. With Freeman out of the lineup, Wagner turned the ball over 19 times while SFC was guilty of just 12 miscues.
SFC's Rosel Hurley led all scorers with 12 points, one of three Terriers in double digits along with Sanabria and Jalen Jordan who hit for 11 and 10 points, respectively.
After Wagner built a 19-17 lead at the break following a defensive-minded opening half, neither team could gain any breathing room in the second half as the biggest point margin, until the game's final 12 seconds, was four points.
This physical contest featured eight lead changes and eight ties, the last of which came with 1:45 left and the game deadlocked at 44-44. This was the juncture when the Terriers worked the ball around until the waning seconds of the shot clock before Sanabria hoisted his clutch three-pointer to give SFC a 47-44 lead with just 25 ticks remaining.
After Saunders missed a running one-hander off the glass with 13 seconds left, Wagner was forced to go into foul mode, which resulted in SFC making four consecutive free throws in fashioning the 51-44 win.
Wagner built a 19-17 halftime lead in this this. Both defenses held the upper hand in the opening 20 minutes with the Seahawks hitting 31.6 percent (6-19) while limiting the Terriers to 29.2 percent (7-24). Helping the Wagner defensive effort in the first half were four blocked shots, two by Jackson and one each by Sumbry and sophomore guard
Tyler Plummer.
The Seahawks were 2-of-8 (25 percent) from deep in the first half while holding SFC to just 9.1 percent (1-of-11) from downtown. Wagner held a slim 13-1 edge in first-half rebounding.
On Saturday, February 9, Wagner will conclude its tour of downtown Brooklyn when the Seahawks face LIU Brooklyn in a 4:30 p.m. tip at the Steinberg Wellness Center. This matchup will be the second game of a doubleheader with the Wagner and LIU Brooklyn women's teams set to tip it off in a 1:00 p.m. start.
