Four-Game Win Streak Comes To An End For Women's Hoops In 81-66 Setback At Mount St. Mary's

Emmitsburg, MD – Trailing 59-48 entering the fourth quarter, the Wagner College women's basketball outscored Mount St. Mary's 13-8 over a near three-minute stretch in cutting the deficit to six, 67-61, before the Mountaineers closed out the game on a 14-5 run to win it by a count of 81-66 on Monday night at Knott Arena.
 
With the loss, Wagner, who falls to 9-15 overall and 7-6 in the Northeast Conference (NEC), sees its season-high four-game winning streak halted while the Mountaineers move to .500 overall with a 12-12 record and a 6-7 in league contests.

With tonight's outcome, these teams, are now separated by one game in the league standings as the season series finished 1-1.
 
Three Seahawks finished in double-figures, led by Co-NEC Player of the Week, Taylah Simmons, who tallied a team-high 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field in 37 minutes of action. The Melbourne, Australia native also grabbed a team-leading eight rebounds while dishing out three assists.
 
Junior forward, Jordan Hobson, hit for a new career-high, ending with 16 points, of which 13 came in the first half of play. The Richmond, CA native tied her season-high mark of four made three-pointers, while also leading the way for the visitors with a career-best four steals in 27 minutes of action.
 
Senior point guard Nakylia Carter was the third Seahawk to reach double-figures, as the Oklahoma City, OK native netted 11 points, nine of those coming from the free-throw line. Carter also contributed on the boards, corralling six rebounds while playing the entire 40 minutes.
 
The Mountaineers had four score in double digits, led by Rebecca Lee's game-high 22 points (9-of-11 FG) in 23 minutes of action. Juliette Lawless netted 20 on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor, highlighted by a perfect 4-of-4 from the outside and 6-of-6 accuracy from the free throw line in her 28 minutes of play.

Jatarrikah Settle and Michaela Harrison rounded out the double-figure scoring production for the Mountaineers, finishing with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
 
Wagner opened the game on a 10-4 run, before Mount St. Mary's trimmed the deficit to three, 10-7, thanks to a three-pointer from Harrison.  The visiting Seahawks outscored the Mountaineers, 12-10, over the remainder of the period in taking a 22-17 lead.

The Seahawks shot a blistering 64.3 percent from the field in the opening quarter while holding the Mount To just 37.0 percent shooting.
 

 

 
In the second quarter, Mullen put the Seahawks ahead by seven, 24-17, the largest lead the Green & White had in the opening half. The Mountaineers erupted on a 19-2 run over a four minute stretch in taking a ten-point lead, 36-26, after Settle was able to convert on the layup in the paint.

Mount St. Mary's went 7-of-9 from the field during this run, which included a trio of three-pointers as Lawless and Settle combined for 14 of the 19 points during the outburst. Mullen silenced the run with a three-pointer with 3:19 left before the half.
 
The Mountaineers scored eight of the final eleven points in the frame to take a 44-32 advantage into the halftime break. For the quarter, MSM outscored Wagner, 27-10, while the Mountaineers converted on 50.0 percent from the field and 55.6 percent from the outside.

For the half, Wagner shot 54.2 percent from the field, led by Hobson, who netted 13 points (5-of-9 | 3-of-6 3FG%). Simmons contributed 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting in the opening half.
 
Mount opened the third quarter on a mini 6-2 run to up its lead to 50-34 before the Seahawks valiantly fought back, outscoring the Mountaineers, 14-7, over the next seven and half minutes in trimming the deficit to single digits, 57-48, after Carter hit a pair from the line.

Mount's Taylor Addison pushed the lead back to double-figures with a layup as the Seahawks found themselves down 59-48 heading into the fourth.
 
Lee jumped-started the final quarter with a layup that extended the home team's advantage to 61-48, before the Green & White answered back. Sophomore guard, Khaleah Edwards (5p, 7r, 3a) drilled a corner three-pointer in front of her team's bench that ignited an 8-0 run, which was capped off by Hobson's fourth three-pointer of the evening, and trimmed the Mountaineers lead to five, 61-56, with 8:26 left in regulation.
 

 
The Mountaineers seized the momentum with  a 12-5 run over the next four minutes in building back a double-digit lead of 12, 73-61, with 4:16 to go.

Sophomore Alayshia Dailey (8p, 1r, 25 minutes) was then able to create space along the baseline and muscle her way to the basket, as Wagner found themselves down 11, 75-64, at the 3:07 mark. But it wasn't enough as the Mountaineers closed the game out scoring six of the final eight points in recording the 81-66 win to split the season series.
 
Wagner, who was held to just 25.0 shooting from the field in the third quarter despite outscoring MSM, 16-15, shot 44.7 percent for the game and 30.0 percent from the outside.

The Mountaineers, who converted on 54.5 percent from the floor during the third quarter, hit on 47.3 percent of their attempts for the game and 42.3 percent from the outside.
 
The Mount held a 35-26 advantage on the boards while converting 26 points off 20 Seahawks mishaps. Wagner was able to turn 20 Mountaineer turnovers into 23 points but the home team outscored the Seahawks, 14-2, in second-chance opportunities.
 
The Seahawks are back in action on Saturday, February 23 as Wagner makes the short trek to Hackensack, NJ to tangle with the Fairleigh Dickinson University Knights. Tip-off from Stratis Arena is set for 2:00 p.m.
