Staten Island, NY – Saint Francis U scored six minutes into the contest before the Wagner College women's soccer team answered a minute into the second half but a pair of late scores sealed the match in favor of the Red Flash as the Seahawks dropped a 3-1 decision on Sunday afternoon at Hameline Field.
With the loss, Wagner was dealt its first Northeast Conference (NEC) defeat while seeing its three match unbeaten snapped in the process. The Green & White move to 4-7-1 overall on the season and 2-1-1 in league play while SFU improves to 4-6-1 and 3-1-0 in league.
The Seahawks had their first chance as sophomore forward
Luisa Barone, who recorded her second goal of the season on Friday evening against Robert Morris, was able to put a shot on target but was denied by SFU's goalkeeper, Julia Hernan.
The visitors were able to take advantage on their first offensive possession of the contest. Mariana Jaleca created space and booted a shot that hit the crossbar and fluttered back into the zone where Leanna Choo was able to secure the loose ball and put the Red Flash ahead, 1-0.
Saint Francis U continued to apply pressure but Seahawk freshman goalkeeper,
Erin Kelly, was able to deny a pair of chances.
The Seahawks then applied pressure of their own, creating two scoring opportunities in the 15' as freshman
Renata Djuravecevic fired a shot on target but was denied. Two minutes later, senior
Maria Nunez received a cross from junior
Mya Donnelly and headed the ball towards the left corner of the net before narrowly missing the mark..
SFU had a slight 9-8 advantage in shots in the opening stanza while Kelly was able to record five saves for the Green & White.
Wagner didn't waste any time in the second half, as Green & White were able to find the game-tying score in the 50'. Barone beat her defender deep on the right side and crossed the ball into the middle, just over the reach of the SFU keeper and found the foot of junior forward,
Lindsay Weiss, who was able to bury the game-tying score.
For Weiss, it marked her first career score while Barone earned her second career helper and first of the season.
Djuravecevic nearly gave the home eleven the lead a minute after Weiss' score but Hernan was able to negate the chance.
Junior
Madison Starr attempted a free kick, from approximately 40 yards out on the right side, that found the hands of Hernan in the 76', as Wagner threatened for the go-ahead score.
The Red Flash then broke the 1-1 stalemate in the 77' as Alyssa McGhee stole the ball away from a Wagner defender and finished to the back right of the net. SFU added to its lead in the 89' as Choo recorded her second goal of the contest.
For the match, the teams took 16 shots apiece with the Red Flash having two more shots on goal (11-9). Nunez took four shots to lead the Green & White while Barone and Djuravecevic had three shots apiece with all three attempts from Djuravecevic finding their way on target.
Kelly made eight saves on the afternoon while her counterpart, Hernan, was credited with seven.
The Green & White will hit the road for a pair of NEC matches, beginning on Friday, October 11, when they square off against Central Connecticut at 7:00 p.m.
