Staten Island, NY – After holding the No. 24 Fairfield Stags scoreless over the first three quarters, the Wagner field hockey team conceded a trio of fourth quarter scores as the Seahawks dropped a hard-fought decision to the Stags, 3-1, on Thursday afternoon from Wagner Field Hockey Complex.

With the loss, the Seahawks have now dropped four straight Northeast Conference (NEC) matches.

The Stags (13-2, 4-0 NEC) and Seahawks (1-11, 0-4 NEC) battled back-and-forth to no avail for the first 45 minutes. In the first half, Fairfield outshot the Green & White, 7-3.

The visitors had a chance midway into the second quarter when Danielle Profita dribbled around freshman goalkeeper, Justine Van Spengler, to give herself a clear view of the goal. However, freshman defender Joy Muller got her stick in the way at the last second to keep the score tied at zero.

The Seahawks saw their best chances come in the third period, recording six shots and three corners in a 40 second span. Two blocks and four saves from Fairfield goalie Zoe Rosen prevented Wagner from breaking the tie.

The Stags netted the first goal of the game nearly a minute into the final period on a set corner play. Profita input the ball to Luzi Persiehl, who played the ball back in front of the net where Profita was able to corrall the loose ball and send it into the cage for the 1-0 advantage.

Five minutes later, Fairfield doubled its lead on a seemingly identical corner play. This time, it was Malen Iglesias recording the goal on deflection in front of goal as she received the pass from Persiehl.

With just under three minutes remaining in the game, Ymke Huisman scooped up an errant pass from the Wagner defense, dribbled into the circle and fired a shot that got past  graduate goalkeeper Annabel Zandvoort, who played the entirety of the second half, in upping the visitors lead to three.

Freshman standout Hannah Meyer responded for the Seahawks, a minute later, when she dribbled up the field and across the circle, before unleashing a shot past Rosen, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

Wagner was unable to create another scoring chance in falling to the nationally ranked Stags.

The Seahawks will be back in action on Sunday, October 27, as Wagner travels to New Haven, CT to take on conference foe, Sacred Heart from Johnson Field on the campus of Yale University.

The match is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start and will be streamed on NEC Front Row.
