Women's Basketball Falls To Defending NEC Champion Saint Francis U On Monday

Loretto, PA – Four Seahawks scored in double figures, led by redshirt sophomore Taylah Simmons' team-high 19, but defending Northeast Conference (NEC) champion Saint Francis U jumped out to an early lead en route to posting a a 107-70 win over Wagner at DeGol Arena on Monday.
 
With the loss, Wagner falls to 5-14 overall and 3-5 in league play while the Red Flash improves to 8-12 and 5-3 in conference games.
 
After being held scoreless in the first quarter, Simmons netted 13 of her 19 points in the second quarter, converting on 6-of-7 from the field in ten minutes of play. For the game, the Melbourne, Australia native hit on 9-of-14 from the floor in a total of 32 minutes of action.
 
Sophomore guard Alayshia Dailey filled up the stat sheet for the visitors, as she concluded the contest with 15 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field and hitting on 7-of-8 from the free throw in 35 minutes of play. Dailey dished out a team-high seven assists, the seventh time this season that she has recorded five or more helpers in a game, and the fourth time in the last five contest. She also grabbed a team-leading six rebounds while recording a steal and a block in the contest.
 
Freshman forward, Enas Nigatu, who made her first collegiate start in tonight's contest, netted a career-high 12 points on an efficient 5-of-6 shooting from the floor in 19 minutes of action. The first-year Seahawk also grabbed four rebounds, two steals and recorded a block. Junior forward Jordan Hobson rounded out the scoring for Wagner with ten points in 21 minutes off the bench.
 


Saint Francis U was led by Jessica Kovatch, the NEC's all-time leading scorer, who she scored 30 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the field, while hitting on 60.0 percent from three-point range in 34 minutes of play. Courtney Zezza added 15 points while Haley Thomas contributed 14 points and a team-best seven rebounds in her 24 minutes of action.
 
Wagner scored the opening basket of the contest as sophomore Khaleah Edwards hit on a jumper before the Red Flash embarked on a 18-2 run over the next five minutes in taking an 18-4 lead, as Thomas and Karson Swogger (9 points, 5 assists) combined the score 15 of the 18 points during the outburst. Hobson drilled a three-pointer to halt the SFU run.  Following another made bucket from Hobson, SFU closed out the quarter with ten straight points in taking a 28-9 lead.
 


Wagner sparked a mini 6-2 run to open the second quarter, as the lead was cut in half, 30-15, as Simmons started to heat up for the visitors. From that point, the two teams began to find their offensive rhythm on a consistent basis, with the Seahawks hitting on 50.0 percent of its two-point field goals over the final nine minutes off the frame, but SFU continued its offensive prowess, outscoring the Green & White outscoring them, 21-16, in taking a 51-31 halftime lead.
 

 


Saint Francis U came out in the second half hitting on its first three attempts and never look back in securing its fifth league win of the season. For the game, Wagner shot close to 47.0 percent from the field but struggled from the outside, hitting under 25.0 percent from long range. The Seahawks outscored SFU, 42-38, from inside the paint on the evening, which is good for the second highest total this season (44 vs. Mount St. Mary's…1/19/19).

The 107 points allowed in tonight's contest marks the first time the Seahawks have allowed an opponent to reach triple-figures since December 21, 2016, when the Green & White fell to Princeton (107-47).
 
Wagner return to the Spiro Sports Center as they will begin a "home-and-home" series with LIU Brooklyn, beginning on Saturday, February 2. Tipoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.  These same two teams will meet in Brooklyn a week later on February 9 at 2:00 pm
