Box Score

Staten Island, NY – Redshirt senior guard Romone Saunders scored 16 points and redshirt junior forward Tim Graham matched his career high with 10 but it wasn't enough as the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers earned a 70-56 Northeast Conference (NEC) win over Wagner on Saturday.

With the loss, which snaps a two-game winning streak for the Seahawks, Wagner falls to 8-8 on the season, 2-2 in the NEC while the Mount improves to 4-14 on the season, and 1-4 in league play.

Mose Valdo led three Mount players in double figures with 20 points while Damian Chong Qui and mar Habwe netted 12 and 10 points, respectively.

The Mountaineers took advantage of cold Wagner shooting in building a 30-25 halftime lead as the Seahawks shot 29.6 percent from the floor (8-of-27) in the opening half, including just 17.6 percent from three-point range (3-of-17).

The Seahawks opened the second half with an 7-3 spurt in drawing to within one at 33-32 following a free from redshirt senior forward AJ Sumbry with 15:56 left.

The Mountaineers then countered with a 19-7 run, capped by a Dee Barnes three-pointer, with 8:43 remaining, top open a 52-39 lead and Wagner never got closer than 10 the rest of the way.

The Mount outshot Wagner 48.9%-35.2%, while holding the edge in rebounding (34-30), points in the paint (20-18), points off turnovers (9-8) and second-chance points (11-4).
The Seahawks shared the ball on this day, as they were credited with 13 assists on 19 made baskets and held a positive 13-1 assist-to-turnover ratio, but in the end could not overcome their cold shooting, particularly from the perimeter as Wagner finished just 28.1 percent (9-of-32) from deep.

With his 16 points on the afternoon, Saunders, the reigning NEC Co-Player of the Week, who returned from the game in the second half after twisting his ankle, moves up to spots into 30th on the Wagner all-time scoring list with 1,141 points.

The Seahawks travel to Sacred Heart on Monday, January 21, in a 3:30 p.m. Martin Luther King Day tip.
