Staten Island, NY –
With the game tied at 1-1 heading into the bottom of the eighth, sophomore designated hitter Freddy Sabido delivered what turned out to be the game-winning two-run RBI single as the Wagner baseball team concluded the 2018 regular season with a 3-1 victory over Sacred Heart.

For Wagner, they finish the regular season with a program-best 36 wins (36-16) while setting a new program-record for Northeast Conference (NEC), securing their 21st league victory (21-7).

Additionally, with the Seahawks completing the three-game sweep of Sacred Heart, Wagner clinched a share of the NEC Regular Season Championship, along with Bryant. This marks the second-time in program history that the Green & White have captured the regular season title. The Green & White will be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming NEC Tournament and face No. 3 seed, LIU Brooklyn while the Bulldogs take on the No. 4 seed, Mount St. Mary's. Game times are TBD.

Sabido and senior LF Anthony Godino each had two hits in the nightcap of Friday's doubleheader while senior 2B Nick Mascelli drove in the other RBI for the home team. Senior SS Sean Mazzio, who went 1-for-3 with a run scored, became the 11th member of the 200-hit club, as the West Chester, PA native now stands at 201, which is tied for ninth all-time with former Seahawks Nick Papa ('06) and Chris Dick ('04).

Freshman RHP Pat Gallagher allowed one run on five hits while walking four and striking out in five innings of work. Junior left-hander, Keaton Freire (3-2), came on in relief of Gallagher, throwing three scoreless innings in earning the victory. Senior Brad Currao worked a scoreless ninth in picking up his third save of the season and second in as many days.

Seven different Pioneers had a hit in game two with Isiah Daubon driving in the lone RBI for the visitors in the contest. Matt Aufiero pitched 4.2 of scoreless baseball, giving up just four hits while striking out four before departing with a no-decision. Brendan Coffey (1-1) took the loss, giving up the two runs to Sabido in two innings of work.

Sacred Heart broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth. PJ DeFilippo started the frame with a single through the left side. Following a one-out walk to Kyle Oliver, Anthony Capozziello walked to load the bases for the visitors.

Daubon worked the count full before sending a single to center field. DeFilippo came into score while Capozziello moved to third but Oliver was out trying to score after Silvestrone fired a throw that was cut off by senior 1B Kyle Brey, who sent a laser to junior catcher, Phil Capra, for the out.

Wagner scored the tying run in the bottom of the sixth. Godino led off with a walk and then a steal of second base. Mazzio singled up the middle, giving the Green & White runners on the corners with no outs and chasing reliever Jackson Aldam from the contest.  Mascelli lofted a pop fly to center that was caught by Daubon, which allowed Godino to tag up from third and come into score to knot the game at 1-1.

The Pioneers had a chance in the top of the eighth. Jake Frasca worked a leadoff walk before Elijah Brown reached on a bunt single. DeFilippo flew into the 8-5-4 double play, which retired Brown on the play but allowed Frasca to move to third.

An intentional walk to Schock gave the Pioneers runners on the corners. SHU went to its bench in the form of Bobby Garbuio, who lined out to Godino in left, making a sliding shoe-string catch in ending the inning.

In the bottom half of the frame, Godino led off with a single through the left side. Mazzio drew a walk before the Pioneers went to the bullpen in the form of Nick Rubino. With the count at 1-0, Mascelli laid down a perfectly executed, sacrifice bunt that moved Mazzio to second and Godino to third, setting the stage for Sabido.

After the Seahawks went ahead by two, 3-1, Currao came on in the top of the ninth for Freire. Currao got Capozziello to ground out to short on the first pitch he saw before hitting Daubon on an errant pitch.

The Howell, NJ native settled back on the hill and got Cody Doyle to fly out to left before the ballgame and regular season ended when Stephen Thibault popped out in foul territory as Brey made the running catch before going over the barricade along the first base side.
