Brooklyn, NY – The Wagner baseball team defeated the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers, 2-1, in game one of Saturday's doubleheader at MCU Park in Brooklyn, NY, as the Seahawks earned their seventh straight victory.
With the win, the Seahawks remain atop of the Northeast Conference (NEC) standings, improving to 19-10 overall and 8-1 in league games, while the Mountaineers fall to 7-17 and 2-6 in conference.
Junior LHP
Koby Bishop, who made his fifth start of the season, gave up one hit over three innings of work, giving up one earned run while walking five and striking out four. Classmate
Keaton Freire (2-1) picked up his second win of the season, came on in relief of Bishop, tossing three scoreless innings, giving up two hits while walking two and striking out four.
Sophomore RHP
Nick Robino picked up his fourth save of the season. Senior LF
Anthony Godino and sophomore designated hitter
Freddy Sabido each had two hits in the victory. Mount was held to just three hits, with Patrick Causa driving in the Mount's lone run in the contest.
The Seahawks broke the ice in their half of the first. Senior 2B
Nick Mascelli opened the inning with a single to left and advanced to second on a wild pitch before junior catcher
Phil Capra sent a sacrifice fly to center.
Initially, Mascelli, after tagging up at third and sprinting for home. was called out on the play but, after a brief meeting between the umpires, the call was reversed in the Seahawks' favor, as Wagner took a 1-0 lead.
After a scoreless second, the Mountaineers tied the game at 1-1. Bishop walked back-to-back batters before striking out Alex Kriss. Following a double steal, Causa grounded out to second, plating Brendan Dabagian.
Both teams were held off the scoreboard before the Green & White ultimately pushed across the deciding run in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Sadbio ripped a single to left field but was later tagged out at the plate attempting to score on a double by senior RF
Kyle Cala doubled.
Myles Nicholson fired a laser to Causa, who relayed a strike to Zack Costello in time for the catcher to make the tag before Sabido reached the plate. Facing an 0-2 count, Silvestrone singled back up the middle, scoring Cala as the Seahawks took a one-run lead.
The Mount's starter, Michael Yetter, went six innings, giving up all seven hits, and both runs while walking four and striking out one in taking his second loss of the season (0-2).
