Teaneck, NJ – Following yesterday's doubleheader sweep on Senior Day against Robert Morris, the Wagner College softball team lost its final regular season doubleheader to Fairleigh Dickinson, falling 9-8 in game one before dropping 5-2 decision in the second game of the afternoon.
With the two losses, Wagner now sits at 14-28 on the year and 4-12 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play heading into the Northeast Conference's (NEC) makeup weekend.
Game 1 – Fairleigh Dickinson 9, Wagner 8
Both teams combined for 18 hits and had three errors apiece in an offensive battle. After the Knights took a 1-0 lead in the second, the Seahawks answered in the third, as sophomore
Zoe Bender scored on an error while a sacrifice fly by senior
Stefanie Aplin gave Wagner a 2-1 lead.
FDU scored two runs in the third, but Wagner once again took the lead in the fourth inning on a three-run blast by sophomore
Amelia Van Orman, her first home run of the season.
The Seahawks were unable to preserve the lead, as FDU scored six runs in the fifth to take a 9-5 lead.
Wagner rallied in the sixth and pulled within one on a two-run single by junior
Karen Prihoda and an RBI groundout by Aplin, but it wasn't enough, as the Knights held on for the win.
Following two complete game victories yesterday, senior
Morgan Brown suffered the loss in the circle after throwing five innings, striking out two batters, while junior
Ciera Luna tossed one inning in relief.
Prihoda, Lewis and Bender led the Seahawks with two hits apiece, while Van Orman paced the Green and White with three RBIs.
Game 2: Fairleigh Dickinson 5, Wagner 2
The Seahawks started fast in the second game of the afternoon, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
After a Prihoda single, Lewis reached on an error to put two runners on base. Two batters later, Aplin came through with a two-run single to shortstop, giving Wagner the early advantage.
The Knights answered with three runs in the bottom half of the first as well as one run in the third and one in the fourth, as Reanna Cervantes led the Knights with three RBIs. Offensively, Aplin and Prihoda had two hits apiece, with Bender chipping in one hit. In the circle, Luna suffered the loss after going the distance, striking out two batters in six innings.
This afternoon's games conclude the regular season for the Seahawks, who await the NEC's scheduling for possible makeup games.
