Staten Island, NY – The Wagner baseball team scored five runs over the first two innings before adding a score in the sixth in winning its seventh straight contest, defeating Fairleigh Dickinson, 6-1, in the series finale on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Seahawks improve to 30-12 on the season and a Northeast Conference-leading 15-3 record in league play while FDU falls to 10-12 overall and 1-17 in conference.
Today's victory also marked the first time that the Green & White have reached the 30-win plateau under seventh-year head coach
Jim Carone. Additionally, this is the first time since 2009 that a Seahawk baseball program recorded at least 30 wins, as that year the Wagner set a program record with 31 wins (31-21; 17-9 NEC).
Sophomore first baseman
Freddy Sabido continued his hot hitting, as he finished 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs. Senior 2B
Nick Mascelli also had three hits in the contest. Senior
Kyle Cala drove in the other RBI in the contest.
Sophomore right-hander
Nick Zuppe earned his first collegiate win (1-0), firing four scoreless innings, giving up just two hits. Junior southpaw
Koby Bishop came on in relief, throwing three innings, allowing only one run on three hits while striking two. Freshman righty
Kevin Wiseman tossed the final two scoreless frames, walking one and striking out three.
The Green & White erupted for three early runs. Sabido drove in the first of his three RBIs as he singled home Mascelli on a base hit to right field. Junior
Joe Silvestrone reached on a fielder's choice, which brought in junior catcher,
Phil Capra. Freshman designated hitter
Ben Montenegro reached on an error by the Knights' shortstop and moved to second on the throw while Sabido crossed the plate for the third run of the inning.
The Seahawks added two more in the bottom of the second in taking a 5-0 lead. With one out, Mascelli singled back up the middle and classmate,
Sean Mazzio, drew a walk. A second straight free pass to Capra loaded the bases for the Seahawks. With the count at 1-1, Sabido delivered his second RBI of the day, sending a single to left field, which brought in Mascelli. Cala then flew out to CF, scoring Mazzio for Wagner's fifth run of the contest.
The Knights scored their lone run in the top of the fifth. Bishop came on for Zuppe and gave up a leadoff single to Corbin Dunnuck followed by a double to Connor Stanton. Oliver Tavares grounded out to short, scoring Dunnuck to cut the lead to 5-1. Bishop struck out Evan McDonald to end the frame.
Wagner scored the final run of the contest in the bottom of the sixth as Sabido drove in his third run of the game, singling to second as Mascelli crossed the plate for the third time in extending the Seahawk lead to 6-1.
FDU's starter, Evan Raiburn, was tagged with the loss (2-4), after giving up five runs (four earned) over two innings of work. Stanton finished 2-for-4 at the plate while Tavares drove in the lone run for the visitors.
Wagner will look to tie the program's single-season win mark when the Seahawks travel across the Verrazano Bridge to tangle with LIU Brooklyn in a four-game set, beginning on May 4.
