Brooklyn, NY – Junior attack
Marjorie Dehm exploded for a career-high six goals, all of which came in the opening half, as the first-place Wagner women's lacrosse team stormed out to a 15-6 halftime lead en route to a 23-13 victory at LIU Brooklyn on Friday.
The 23-goal outburst is the second-highest scoring game in program history. On April 18, 1998, the Green & White earned a 24-4 win over Marist.
In recording their fifth straight victory overall, the Seahawks remain perfect with a 4-0 Northeast Conference (NEC) mark and are now 9-4 overall. With Bryant knocking off Robert Morris 15-9 on Friday night, the Bulldogs moved to 4-0 to remain tied with Wagner atop the league standings. These teams will meet at Hameline Field on Friday, April 27.
While Dehm added one assist to finish with seven points on the day, freshman midfielder and three-time NEC Rookie of the Week,
Ally Alliegro, wound up as the Seahawks' leading scorer with eight points, which came on four goals and a career-high four assists.
The Green & White also received a hat trick from senior midfielder
Lauren Ednie, and two-goal outings by senior attack
Heidi Colford, who added two assists, junior attack
Anna Belle Reilly, who added one assist, and sophomore attack
Stephanie Falcone.
Adding one goal apiece were freshman midfielder
Erin Kerstetter, sophomore attack
Talia Bouzakis, freshman midfielder
Madeline Seims, and freshman attack
Stefani Peluso.
Seims was aggressive and active in the center of the field all afternoon in collecting a career-high nine draw controls, a single-game high for a Seahawk this season, while Ednie was the team-leader in groundballs with five.
After LIU took a 1-0 lead on a score by Amanda Masullo, the Seahawks erupted for seven consecutive goals, three coming from Alliegro. After the Blackbirds got one back on Masullo's second goal, the Green & White closed the half on an 8-4 run in building their 15-6 halftime bulge.
LIU received a tough break early in the game when starting goalie Sam Kidd suffered an injury just 1:22 into the contest that forced her to the sideline the rest of the way. In her stead, Virginia Gibbons came on to record seven saves in 58:38 of action between the pipes.
Statistically, Wagner held a decided advantage in shots (43-29) and groundballs (24-15), while holding a 21-17 edge in draw controls, largely due to Siems' fine play in this area.
In goal for the Seahawks, senior
Lucy Darlington, who entered the game ranked 13
th nationally in save percentage, recorded the win in recording six first-half saves. Classmate
Kelsey Fee came on to play the second half and was credited with two saves.
For the Blackbirds individually, they were led by Sierra O'Connor's four goals, while Masullo finished with two.
The Seahawks are right back at it on Sunday when travel to Fairfield, CT to meet Sacred Heart with opening draw set for 1:00 p.m.
