Ally Alliegro, the first-place Wagner women's lacrosse team earned a 16-11 comeback win at Sacred Heart on Sunday, giving the Seahawks a six-game winning streak.
With the win, the Green & White are now 10-4 on the season and remain perfect in the Northeast Conference (NEC) standings at 5-0. In defeat, the scrappy Pioneers fall to 2-12 overall and 2-3 in league play.
The scene is now set for a showdown at Hameline Field this Friday, April 27. In a 3:00 p.m. opening draw, Wagner will host two-time defending NEC champion Bryant in a matchup of 5-0 teams with home field advantage in next month's conference title game at stake. At the same time as the Seahawks' 16-11 win at SHU, Bryant was making short work of Saint Francis U at home on Senior Day, running past the Red Flash, 21-6.
Today's game was more of a struggle for Wagner than the final score might indicate. SHU's Sydney Ericson gave the Pioneers a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the half by opening the day's scoring just 1:54 into the game. After falling behind 3-1, the Seahawks tied it at 3-3 on a pair of Alliegro goals, before the Pioneers ran off three straight to take a 6-3 lead with eight minutes left in the opening half.
Wagner would narrowly outscore SHU, 2-1, the rest of the half as the Pioneers took a 7-5 lead into the break.
A goal by SHU's Alyssa Pearce with 24:29 left allowed the Pioneers to match their biggest lead of the game at 9-6. The Green & White then got things untracked offensively, unleashing five unanswered goals, as part of a larger 10-1 run, in pulling away for the win.
A score from senior attack
Heidi Colford off an Ednie assist gave the Seahawks their first lead of the game, at 10-9, with 21:11 remaining. Dehm then completed the 5-0 burst, after receiving a feed from Alliegro at the 12:56 mark, to make it an 11-9 game.
After SHU got one back on an unassisted tally from Anna Wise to again make it a one-goal game at 11-10, the Seahawks put together their second 5-0 run of the half, over a span of just 5:23, with Ednie's third goal of this stretch giving Wagner a commanding 16-10 lead at the 2:23 mark.
Nicole Holder of SHU notched the final tally of the game, with 47 seconds left, to fashion the final score of 16-11.
In addition to her four goals, Ednie finished with two assists to give her a six-point game while Alliegro's late assist to Dehm, together with her four-goal effort, gave the three-time NEC Rookie of the Week a five-point afternoon.
Junior attack
Anna Belle Reilly wound up with five points on the day, as well, on two goals and three assists. Colford finished with one goal and one assist to give her two points, while sophomore attack
Stephanie Falcone added one point on an assist.
Alliegro finished with a game-high nine draw controls, which matches the Seahawk season-high of nine that freshman midfielder
Madeline Seims collected in Friday's win at LIU Brooklyn. Sims, a Westbury, NY product, gathered another five draw controls today, giving her 14 in the last two games.
Junior defender
Maddie Courtney paced Wagner in groundballs with five, while her two caused turnovers matched Dehm and Alliegro for team-high honors.
In goal, senior
Kelsey Fee came on to replace starter and classmate,
Lucy Darlington, with 8:04 left in the opening half and the Seahawks trailing 6-3. Fee went the rest of the way, recording five saves, while allowing five goals in earning her first win of the season.
For Sacred Heart, the Pioneers were led by Pearce, who tallied a game-high five goals. Averi Farhat finished with five points as well, on two goals and three assists. Paige Hammick had a busy afternoon in goa for SHU, and was credited with 13 saves.
Statistically, Wagner held an overwhelming 20-9 edge in draw controls, while also leading in shots (35-24) and groundballs (14-11).
NOTE: With her four goals this afternoon,
Lauren Ednie became the ninth player in Seahawk history to hit the 100 career-goal mark. Entering the game with 97, the Verona, NJ native is now at 101, as she passed Kelly Blundin (100 goals from 2006-09) for eight on the all-time career list. Next on the list is Krissie Fischer (1998-01),who's in seventh place with 108 goals.
