Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College softball team's late rally in game two of this afternoon's doubleheader fell just short, as the Seahawks stranded the tying run on base in a 2-1 defeat against reigning Northeast Conference (NEC) champion Saint Francis U.
In the first game of the day, the Seahawks suffered a 6-0 defeat and now sit at 12-21 on the year and 2-7 in NEC play, while SFU moves to 22-17 and 4-0 in conference action.
Game 1: Saint Francis U 6, Wagner 0
Sophomores
Alyssa Tucker and
Hannah Lewis had two hits apiece, while junior
Karen Prihoda and senior
Maite Reece also collected base hits, but it wasn't enough, as the Red Flash put up one run in the third, four in the fourth and one run in the sixth.
Freshman
Arielle Koerber pitched her way out of trouble in the first, striking out SFU's Mikayla Bower with two runners on, before throwing a scoreless second inning.
Overall, the first-year Sehawk finished with three strikeouts on the afternoon, while junior
Ciera Luna threw a scoreless seventh inning in relief.
SFU had a 10-6 advantage in hits, as Madison Cabell led the way with three RBIs for the Red Flash, while Abby Trahan picked up the complete game victory.
Game 2: Saint Francis U 2, Wagner 1
After SFU took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, the Seahawks clawed back in the game, keeping the visiting Red Flash off the scoreboard for the remaining six innings.
In the fourth inning, a leadoff single by Tucker followed by a Reece RBI double cut the deficit in half and gave Wagner its first run of the afternoon.
Reigning NEC Pitcher of the Week
Morgan Brown allowed just one earned run in another complete game effort, but was charged with the loss after picking up four straight victories coming into this afternoon's doubleheader.
Brown struck out a season-high 10 batters for the third time in her last five appearances, allowing Wagner to attempt a late comeback.
In the seventh inning, a leadoff walk to senior
Stefanie Aplin put the tying run on base, but the Seahawks could not capitalize, as SFU completed the sweep.
In a low-scoring contest, the Red Flash held a 4-3 advantage in hits, as Tucker, Reece, and sophomore
Zoe Bender all picked up hits for the Seahawks.
The Seahawks return to non-conference play with a doubleheader at Hofstra on Tuesday, a single makeup game at St. John's on Wednesday, before concluding mid-week play with a single game at Stony Brook on Thursday.
