Riverdale, NY – The Wagner women's lacrosse team jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and never looked back in recording a wire-to-wire 11-6 victory at Manhattan on Sunday, as juniors
Anna Belle Reilly and
Marjorie Dehm led the way with hat tricks.
With the win, the Seahawks improve to 4-3 on the season while the Jaspers are now 3-5.
Dehm scored the first two goals of the game, both coming off assists from Reilly, before senior midfielder
Lauren Ednie made it a 3-0 game with an unassisted tally at the 16:35 mark of the opening half.
The Seahawks' next two scores came on free position shots, the first by sophomore
Meghan Pendergast at 13:40, followed by Reilly's first goal of the game, with 12:08 remaining in the half, in making it a 5-0 game.
After Manhattan's Sarah Lang put the Jaspers on the board to make it 5-1, the Green & White closed the half with a pair of unanswered goals, both by Reilly, as the Seahawks took a 7-1 lead at the intermission.
Dehm completed her hat trick with a goal on a free position shot just 32 seconds into the second half in extending Wagner's lead to 8-1. After Manhattan's Kara Hodapp with 25:15 left to make it an 8-2 game, the Seahawks answered with a 3-0 run on scores by senior attack
Heidi Colford, Reilly, and sophomore midfielder
Cassidy Hall, to push the lead to 11-2.
The Jaspers were able to score four times in the game's final 10:29 but it was too little, too late, as Wagner came away with the 11-6 win.
Reilly (3g, 3a) wound up with a game-high six points, Dehm had three (3g), while Colford finished with two (2g). Registering one point apiece for the Seahawks were Ednie (1g), Pendergast (1g), Hall (1g), and freshman attack
Stefani Peluso (1a).
Ednie paced the Green & White with four draw controls while tying Hall, sophomore midfielder
Kirsten Monte, sophomore defender
Lindsay Haas, and junior defender
Maddie Courtney for the team lead in ground balls with four apiece. Haas also led the team with three caused turnovers while Monte and Courtney were credited with two CTs apiece.
In goal, senior
Lucy Darlington earned the win after allowing just one goal and recording five saves in the opening half before giving way to classmate
Kelsey Fee, who came on to play the second half where she made four saves and allowed five goals.
The Jaspers were led by Lang and Alaina Burgess, who scored two goals each while Hodapp had a game-high three points on one goal and two assists. Nikki Prestiano had 11 saves in goal for Manhattan.
Wagner outshot Manhattan 29-23 while the Jaspers led in ground balls (35-24) and draw controls (10-9) with turnovers ending up even at 24-24. The Seahawks went 4-of-10 on free position shots while the Jaspers' FPS ratio was 3-of-10.
The Green & White return to the friendly confines of Hameline Field for a mini two-game home stretch, vs. Saint Josephs (3/24) and Columbia (3/28), before beginning Northeast Conference (NEC) play at Robert Morris (4/6).
