Lauren Ednie recorded a hat trick and freshman midfielder
Ally Alliegro added two goals and three assists but it wasn't enough as UMass Lowell held on for an 11-9 victory, snapping the Seahawks' three-game winning streak on Sunday afternoon.
With the loss, the Green & White fall to 3-3 on the season while the River Hawks gain their first win of the season in improving to 1-4.
UMass Lowell took a 3-1 halftime lead following a defensive-minded opening 30 minutes. After the River Hawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead, freshman midfielder
Erin Kerstetter put the Seahawks on the board with 15:27 left in the half. Neither team could find the net the rest of the half as UM Lowell took that 3-1 lead into the break.
Wagner opened the second half with a 2-1 spurt, capped by a goal from junior attack
Marjorie Dehm off an Alliegro assist, to draw the Seahawks to within one at 4-3 at the 23:37 mark.
The River Hawks responded with a 4-1 run, capped by a Hana Caster goal, in building an 8-4 lead with 14:54 left. Goals by Ednie and Alliegro, the latter an unassisted tally with 8:38 left, again made it a one-goal game at 8-7.
With 7:53 left, senior attack
Heidi Colford was fouled in front of the goal but River Hawk goalie Courtney Barrett came up with a big save on the ensuing free position shot to preserve the one-goal lead. UMass Lowell then scored two unanswered scores in taking a 10-7 lead with 6:56 left.
Sophomore attack
Stephanie Falcone made it 10-8 off an Alliegro feed with 5:03 left before Kendy Finelli sank a free position shot with 4:13 to go to again push the River Hawk lead to three at 11-8. Colford made it a two-goal game again at 11-9 off a Kerstetter assist, with 2:43 left, but this would be the last score of the game as the River Hawks were able to hang on from there.
In addition to the five and three points from Alliegro and Ednie, Kerstetter added one goal and assist while registering single goals for the Seahawks were Dehm, Colford and Falcone. Alliegro was the Seahawk team-leader in draw controls with six, while Ednie led Wagner in ground balls with five. Senior
Lucy Darlington recorded seven saves in goal over the game's first 53:04 before giving way to classmate
Kelsey Fee, who minded the net in the game's final 6:56.
Caster and Finelli recorded hat tricks to pace UMass Lowell offensively Barrett and Renee Gonzalez combined on six saves for the River Hawks.
UMass Lowell outshot Wagner 26-19 while the Seahawks led in ground balls (27-26) and draw controls (12-10). The River Hawks were 6-of-7 on free position shots while Wagner was 2-of-4 in this category.
The Green & White are back in action on Sunday, March 18 when they travel to Riverdale. NY for a 1:00 p.m. tilt with the Manhattan College Jaspers.
