Women's Soccer Falls To Saint Francis U, 5-0, In Regular Season Finale On Sunday

Loretto, PA – The Wagner College women's soccer team played to a 0-0 tie at the intermission but the Saint Francis U Red Flash netted all five of their goals in the second, two of which came in a 36-second span, as the Seahawks fell 5-0 in their 2018 Northeast Conference (NEC) regular season finale on Sunday afternoon.
 
With the loss, the Green & White concludes the season at 3-14-0 overall and 1-7 in league play. The Red Flash, who have already punched their ticket to the upcoming NEC Women's Soccer Tournament, finish the regular season with a 7-8-3 overall mark and 5-2-1 in conference action.
 
Early on in the contest, the Red Flash had a pair of shots, one of which junior netminder, Delaney Beck, was able to stop. In the 10th minute, Beck was able to deny Sara Suler's header chance to preserve the shutout and two minutes later, stopped Corinne Renninger's shot attempt.
 
Wagner's first chance of the contest came in the 14th minute as Madison Starr blasted a shot on net that was turned aside by SFU's Julia Hernan. Two minutes later, sophomore Le'la Allen sent a header on target that was corralled by Hernan, keeping the game knotted at 0-0.
 
Beck made two more stops in the opening half as the teams entered the break scoreless. The Red Flash outshot Wagner, 10-5. Beck was credited with five saves in the first half to Hernan's two.
 
SFU netted the game's first goal in the 50th minute as Alex Martinez crossed the ball that was settled by Suler, who was able to beat Beck to give the Red Flash a 1-0 lead. The Red Flash struck again in the 59th minute as Mariana Jaleca booted the ball from the corner that found Shannon McGinnis, who headed the ball past Beck to give the Red Flash a 2-0 lead.
 
The Red Flash didn't waste time in getting their third goal of the match as 36 seconds later, Suler netted her second goal of the match after getting the feed from Renninger. SFU nearly got its fourth goal within a two-minute span as Jaleca booted a ball on target that was denied by senior Katie Viscardi, who came on for Beck to start the second half.
 
Wagner nearly got on the board in the 66th minute as junior Maria Nunez blasted a chance that was turned aside by Hernan. On the ensuing Red Flash possession, Jaleca was able to capitalize on the chance and put SFU ahead, 4-0.
 
The Seahawks moved the ball into the offensive zone as freshman Luisa Barone fired a shot on goal that found the arms of Hernan in the 69th minute. Saint Francis U scored its final goal of the fixture in the 82nd minute as Alyssa McGhee was able to collect the loose ball following Leanna Choo's shot attempt.
 
For the match, Wagner was outshot 28-11 while the Seahawks made 11 saves, six coming from Viscardi. For Viscardi, she concludes her Seahawk career with 189 saves. Sophomore Mya Donnelly, Allen, Starr and Nunez each were credited with two shots in the match while Donnelly, Allen, Barone, Starr and Nunez had one find its way on net.
