Jersey City, NJ – The Wagner College women's soccer team earned its third road victory in as many attempts on Wednesday night, as the Seahawks defeated Saint Peter's by a score of 2-0.
"Great performance with some very good moments, especially in the second half," head coach
Phil Casella said after the game. "We scored two very good goals
tonight through the run of play. We were solid defensively and played aggressively despite the poor weather. We are looking to build on this performance for our next match vs Iona which will be another hard test
on Sunday."
With the victory, the Green and White improves to 3-1-1 on the season and extends its win streak over the Peacocks to seven games.
The first half started out slow, as neither team managed an attempt on net in the first 20 minutes of play. The first shot of the game was fired by Wagner junior
Kim Fetto (Manalapan, NJ / Manalapan), but Victoria Scarratt in goal for Saint Peter's was able to make the save.
The Seahawks took control midway through the first period. After shots by sophomore
Maria Nunez (East Greenwich, RI / East Greenwich), junior
Maria D'Amico (Freehold, NJ / Freehold Township), and freshman
Mattea Reale (Ancaster, Ontario, Canada / Bishop Tonnos Catholic Secondary School) missed their target, Wagner took the lead 37 minutes into the contest when freshman
Samantha LaValle (Southbury, CT / Notre Dame of Fairfield) scored her first collegiate goal to give the Seahawks a 1-0 advantage.
After defending three straight corner kick opportunities by the Peacocks to start the second period, the Seahawks doubled their lead 10 minutes into the half on junior
Kristen Bischoff's (Massapequa, NY / Massapequa) first score of the year.
Despite widening its lead to 2-0, the Seahawks needed to survive a tense moment when, 60 minutes into the contest, Saint Peter's was awarded a penalty kick after a hand ball in the box. The Peacocks' bid to draw within one goal, howeverm came up empty when Kelsey Nugent missed wide as the Green & White went on to earn the shutout win.
The Seahawks outshot Saint Peter's 8-7 in the second half and kept the ball in the offensive end of the field, as sophomore
Delaney Beck (Bakersfield, CA / Garces Memorial) became the first Wagner goalie to record a clean sheet on the year after recording two saves in going the distance between the pipes. Tonight's victory also marks Wagner's second consecutive shutout win over Saint Peter's after last year's 5-0 win at home.
Bischoff, along with freshman
Samantha LaValle (Southbury, CT / Notre Dame of Fairfield), led the Seahawks with three shots apiece, while freshman
Mya Donnelly (Manalapan, NJ / Manalapan) contributed two attempts.
Wagner has another MAAC road test on tap Sunday, September 10, when the Seahawks square off with Iona. Kickoff between the Seahawks and Gaels is set for 11:00 am.
