Women's Tennis Posts First Win Under Ferenczi-Bako; Defeats Monmouth 6-1 On Wednesday

West Long Branch, NJ - The Wagner women's tennis team kicked off the 2017-18 season with an impressive 6-1 road victory against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) members, Monmouth University on Wednesday afternoon.  Today's match was the season opener for both schools as the Green & White improves to 1-0 while the Hawks fall to 0-1.
 
Also, today's win marked the first career victory for first-year head coach, Anett Ferenczi-Bako, who took over the program back on August 28.

"Today was a tremendous start to the season," commented Ferenczi-Bako. "The girls played very well and were poised throughout the afternoon."

The Seahawks started the day claiming the doubles point by sweeping all three matches. Sophomore Vedika Anand (New Delhi, India/The Shri Ram School) and senior Samantha Hodges (Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) picked up a 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles over the duo of Sophia Fredriksson and Maria Ivanova.
 
Newcomer Fidan Khalizade (Baku, Azerbaijan/Respublican Olympic Sports Lyceum) and senior Brenda Cumpa (Lima, Peru/Carmelitas [West Virginia State University]) earned a 6-2 triumph over Alexandra Graff and Chinonye Gabriel. In the final doubles match, junior Rina Baynes (Johns Creek, GA/Chattahoochee) and senior Carolyn Gibson (San Marcos, CA / IMG Academy [FL]) blanked the pairing of Rachel Rosenthal and Caroline Mattise, 6-0. 

In singles action, Anand got past Graff, 6-4, 6-0 in No. 1 singles play. For Anand, it marked her second career victory out of the No. 1 singles spot. Khalizade notched her first collegiate singles win, defeating Fredriksson, 6-3; 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Hodges recorded her 18th career singles win and sixth out of the No. 3 spot, getting past Rosenthal, 6-3; 6-1. 

Cumpa and sophomore Melanie Post (Wilmington, NC/John T. Hoggard) posted their first victories of the new season, as Cumpa earned a 6-3; 6-2 win at No. 5 while Post was credited with the triumph at No. 6, besting Mattise, 6-3; 6-1.  For Cumpa, it was her 13th career singles win while Post picked up career win no. 3.

The Seahawks will next compete at the Army West Point Invitational, beginning on Friday, September 22 through September 24.
