Staten Island, NY – Trailing 7-0 after the first three innings, the Wagner College baseball team rallied to score four over the next two frames but couldn't complete the comeback, falling to the Central Connecticut State University Blue Devils, 7-4, in game one of Sunday's Northeast Conference (NEC) doubleheader.
With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 17-25 on the season and 9-11 in league play while the Blue Devils improve to 28-19 and 17-6 in conference games.
Before the start of game one, the Seahawks honored their five seniors in an on-field ceremony. Senior RHP
Danny Marsh (Monroe Township, NJ/Monroe Township) took the loss, falling to 6-2 on the year after lasting 2.2 innings. Freshmen relievers
Steven Bowley (Medford, NJ/Holy Cross Academy) and
Nick Robino (Wilmington, DE/Salesianum School) combined to throw 4.1 scoreless innings and allowing just two hits.
Sophomore catcher
Phil Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem) was the offense for the Green & White, going 3-for-4 with two home runs, two runs scored and all four RBIs. Freshman designated hitter
Freddy Sabido (Staten Island, NY/Susan E. Wagner [Saint Louis Univ]) was the only other Seahawk with multiple hits, finishing 2-for-4 with a run scored. Junior SS
Sean Mazzio (West Chester, PA/Salesianum School [DE], junior RF
Kyle Cala (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial), sophomore CF
Joe Silvestrone (Manalapan, NJ/Freehold Township) and sophomore 3B
Anthony Pecora (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) each had a hit.
CCSU got on the board first with two runs in the top of the first. Dean Lockery led off the game with a single and moved to third after Tyler Coleman reached on a throwing error by Marsh. The Seahawk starter was able to retire Ryan Costello on strike before allowing a two-run single to Buddy Dewaine.
The Blue Devils added two more in the top of the second in taking a 4-0 lead. Nick Garland kicked off the inning with a double down the right field line. With one out, Lockery walked, and both runners moved up on a successful double steal. Coleman singled through the left side, bringing in Garland. The visitors added one more in the frame as Lockery came in on a passed ball.
After Wagner had gone down in order in the bottom of the second, CCSU added three more runs, extending their lead to 7-0. Mitch Guilmette led off the inning with a single to right center. Chris Kanios reached on a throwing error by the Seahawk third baseman, which moved up the runners to second and third before Jennings roped a single to short scoring Guilmette. Garland plated the second run in the frame, on a sacrifice bunt, scoring Kanios and moving Jennings to second. The final run came on a bases loaded walk to Ryan Costello. Bowley came in for Marsh and retired Dewaine on one pitch.
Wagner got on the board in the bottom of the fourth as Capra led off the inning with a solo home run that sailed over the right field wall. The Seahawks threatened for more after back-to-back hits from Cala and Silvestrone, but Pecora and freshman 1B
Nick D'Amore (Philadelphia, PA/Neumann-Goretti) flew out to right and left to end the inning.
The Seahawks struck again in the bottom of the fifth, closing the gap to three, at 7-4. With one out, Mazzio singled to center while Sabido followed with a base hit to right. On the second pitch that Capra saw from CCSU's reliever, Patrick Mitchell, the second-year Seahawk belted his second round tripper of the day almost to the same spot as his fourth-inning home run.
Central had a chance to add more in their half of the seventh as Bowley walked the leadoff man, Nick Landell. Wagner went to the bullpen, bringing in Robino, who got the first two outs on a grounder and a strikeout. Costello was intentionally walked to setup the force at any base. Robino was able to jam Dewaine on the first-pitch he saw and got him to ground out to short.
In the bottom of the frame, Wagner was down to its final out before Capra lofted a single to left field but was stranded on first as junior LF
Anthony Godino (Thornwood, NY/Pleasantville) flied out to left ending the contest.
Central's Mike Delease went four innings in picking up his fourth win of the season (4-0) while Jared Gallagher earned his seventh save of the year.
