Marjorie Dehm (Baldwinsville, NY / CW Baker / Vermont) poured in four goals, junior attacker Heidi Coilford (Eden Praire, MN / Eden Praire) handed out five assists, and junior goalie
Kelsey Fee (White Plains, White Plains / Ithaca) came up with a clutch save in the waning seconds as the Wagner women's lacrosse team held off LIU Brooklyn 14-13 in a wild shootout today at Hameline Field.
The Senior Day victory in the Seahawks' final home game of the season improved their record to 3-2 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play and 5-10 overall. With the loss, the feisty Blackbirds fall to 0-5 in conference and 2-11 overall.
Prior to the game, a ceremony was held in honor of Wagner's three seniors – attackers
Nicole Luzzi (Branford, CT / Branford) and
Olivia Streilein (Mr. Laurel, NJ / Lenape) and defender
Amanda Rey (Turnersville, NJ / Washington Township).
After taking an 8-7 halftime lead, the Green & White opened the second half with a 5-1 run, capped by a goal by sophomore attacker
Anna Belle Reilly (Paradise Valley, AZ / Notre Dame Prep) with 7:56 to play which extended the Wagner lead to a seemingly comfortable 13-8 margin.
The Blackbirds, however, rallied with a game-ending 5-1 outburst of their own to make it a 14-13 game and nearly tied it up in the closing seconds. When Wagner was whistled for an infraction on a draw control with 25 seconds to play following a free position goal by LIU's Candace Mosal, the Blackbirds gained possession with a chance to tie.
With three seconds left to play, Mosal uncorked the would-be tying goal from close range but Fee was able to come up with the save before corralling the ground ball herself and running out the clock.
In game that featured seven lead changes and six ties, the Seahawks had three different players score three or more goals. In addition to Dehm's four-goal outburst, Wagner received hat tricks from Reilly and Streilein, each of whom also tallied two assists in finishing with five points apiece.
Colford led the team with seven points as the hard-shooting lefty added two goals to her five-assist effort. Rey, a two-time All-NEC performer, delivered her customary scrappy, ball-hawking play while pacing the Seahawks in groundballs (5), draw controls (4) and caused turnovers (3).
In goal, Fee, the reigning NEC Defensive Player of the Year, came up with 12 saves, none bigger than her late, game-saving stop.
For LIU Brooklyn, Mosal and Jillian May led the way with three goals apiece while Mary McQueen, Bianca Santucci and Jenn Peters added two goals each. Goalie Virginia Gibbons was active all game long in recording 14 saves.
The Seahawks held a 34-28 edge in shots and a 21-15 advantage in groundballs while the Blackbirds won 19-of-29 draw controls. On free positions shots, LIU was 3-of-7 while Wagner was 3-of-8. The gritty Wagner defense came up with 13 caused turnovers as the Blackbirds had 23 turnovers on the day while the Green & White turned it over 17 times.
The Seahawks will conclude the regular season on the road next weekend with games at Central Connecticut (4/28) and at Bryant (4/30) and have an inside track to their third straight NEC Tournament, which will get underway on May 5 at the home of the regular season championship team.
NOTES – For Dehm, her four goals matches her career high and marks the seventh time this season that she has tallied three or more goals in a game. Streilein's three-goal effort was her third of the season career hat trick number 11. Reilly's hat trick was one shy of her career-high four-goal outing which came in the season opener vs. Iona (2/15) and was the seventh time this year that he knocked home three or more goals.
