Philadelphia, PA – The Wagner men's lacrosse team was unable to overcome an early 5-0 deficit as Saint Joseph's went on to earn a 14-5 Northeast Conference (NEC) victory this afternoon.
With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 6-8 on the season, 1-4 in NEC play while the Hawks improve to 4-9 overall and 1-4 in the league.
The Green & White, who are tied for the program's all-time single-season win total, will look to break that mark in the regular season finale vs. Sacred Heart at Hameline Field on Friday, April 28. The Senior Night matchup between the Seahawks and the Pioneers will be a 7:00 p.m. start and mark the first home night game in program history.
In today's contest, junior attackman
Andrew Streilein (Mt. Laurel, NJ / Lenape) and junior midfielder
JP Pawela (Montgomery Village, MD / St. John's College) paced Wagner with two goals apiece while Streilein added an assist to finish with a team-high three points. Fifth-year senior midfielder
Paul DeVita (Westfield, NJ / Westfield) also found the net today while freshman attackman
Nic Ancona (Warrenton, VA / Paul VI) and senior attackman
Christian McCormick (Royersford, PA / Spring-Ford) tallied one assist each.
Midfielder
William McMenamin (Longport, NJ / St. Augustine Prep) was a bright spot in the X for the Seahawks as the fifth-year senior won 12-of-17 faceoffs in addition to collecting a team-high seven groundballs.
Junior
Matt Sefcik (Towaco, NJ / Morristown Beard) recorded five first-half saves before giving way to sophomore
Omar Alhagiko (Staten Island, NY / Tottenville) who stopped four shots while allowing just four goals in a career-long 30-minute stint between the pipes.
Saint Joseph's displayed balanced scoring on the afternoon as four different Hawks registered two-goal games with Chris Blewitt adding two assists for a team-high four points. T.J. Jones recorded 12 saves in goal in 57:37 of action before Pat Dallon on to make two saves in the game's final 2:23.
Thanks in large part to the play of
William McMenamin, the Seahawks owned a 13-10 edge in the faceoff battle while Saint Joseph's led in shots (38-29) and groundballs (28-19). Wagner was 13-of-16 on clears and turned the ball over 15 times while the Hawks were a perfect 20-of-20 on their clearing attempts while committing just 10 turnovers.
Today's game was a clean one as neither team was assessed a single penalty on the day.
