No. 3 Seed Seahawks Advance To Third Straight Semifinals After Blanking Sacred Heart In NEC Quarterfinals

West Windsor, NJ –  For the second straight season, the Wagner College men's tennis team, the No. 3 seed in the 2017 Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament, defeated the No. 6 seeded, Sacred Heart University Pioneers, 4-0, on Friday.
 
With the victory, the Seahawks improve to 14-7 on the season, tying the mark of the 2014-15 team who went 14-10. The Pioneers conclude the 2016-17 season with a record of 3-15.
 
The Green & White advances to the NEC semifinals for the third straight season and second consecutive under head coach Jason Sinkoff.
 
"We have worked hard all year for this tournament," commented Sinkoff. "We got off to a great start this afternoon. Everyone played solid Seahawk tennis, from doubles to our individual matches."
 
After No. 1 doubles went unfinished, the Seahawks claimed the matches' first point taking No. 2 & No. 3 Flight doubles. The tandem of freshman Dylan Walters (Johannesburg, South Africa/St. Stithians Boys' College) and sophomore Eric Poland (Fort Meyers, FL/Bishop Verot) improved to 9-2 on the season after picking up 6-3 victory over Seiji Hosokowa/Bryan Einstoss at No. 2.
 
Junior Charlton Boyd (Shreveport, LA/Loyola College Prep) and sophomore Ilya Kneppelhout (Woubrugge, Netherlands/Scala College Secondary School) moved to 17-9 on the season after earning a 6-1 victory at No. 3.
 
In singles play, Poland earned his 15th win of the season after picking up a 6-2; 6-1 victory at No. 5. Freshman Hans Ohrner (Margate, FL/Coral Springs Christian Academy) also picked up his 15th singles triumph of the year and sixth out of the No. 3 position. Sophomore Dale Sandy (Durban, South Africa/Kersney College Secondary School) propelled the Seahawks into the semifinals with a 6-4; 6-2 win over Hosokowa at No. 2 singles.
 
The Seahawks will take on the No. 2 seeded, Saint Francis U Red Flash on Saturday, April 22 at 11:30 a.m. The Red Flash advanced to tomorrow's semifinals after blanking their Franciscan counterparts, the St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers, 4-0.
