Staten Island, NY – Trailing 10-6 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Wagner softball team rallied for five runs, capped by a game-winning RBI single by sophomore
Karen Prihoda (Hamilton Square, NJ / The Lawrenceville School), in earning an 11-10 victory over Drexel in game two of today's doubleheader. In game one, the Seahawks fell to the Dragons, 5-0.
With the split, the Seahawks are now at 16-21 on the season, while Drexel stands at 12-22.
Game 2 Recap – Wagner 11, Drexel 10
Prihoda led Wagner once again, compiling two RBIs on four hits, including the game winner, while senior
Brianna Tredway (Downingtown, PA / Downingtown West) collected three hits. Freshman
Kaila Smith (Millville, NJ / Millville) went 2-for-4 with one RBI, while first-year Seahawk
Kat Holmes-Stall picked up two RBIs in her lone at bat of the afternoon.
Drexel took an early lead with two runs in the first inning and one in the second, before the Seahawks countered with two runs in the third and one in the fourth to tie the game at 3-3.
Freshman
Zoe Bender (Glen Rock, NJ / Glen Rock) got the scoring started for Wagner in the third with an RBI groundout, while Tredway followed it up with a single to right field, scoring Prihoda. In the fourth, sophomore
Kyleigh Norris (Toms River, NJ / Toms River East) ripped a single to center, scoring junior
Maddie Marable (Reno, NV / Earl Wooster).
The Dragons answered right back, scoring four runs in the top of the fifth to take 7-3 lead, before Wagner countered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Senior
Hana Gilbert (Valley Center, CA / Valley Center) put the ball in play, scoring Prihoda on the fielder's choice, before pinch runner
Maite Reece (Covina, CA / Gabrielino) stayed alive in a rundown just long enough to score Bender from third. In manufacturing a run on the base paths, the Seahawks closed the deficit to 7-5.
In a back-and-forth game, Drexel scored two more runs on a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly in the sixth, while the Seahawks got one back in their half of the sixth on an RBI single from Prihoda which made it a 9-6 game.
After another Drexel run extended the Dragons' lead to 10-6, the Green and White answered with that furious five-run rally in the seventh which came on on six hits.
Tredway and Gilbert led off with back-to-back base hits, before Smith plated the first run of the inning. Next up, junior
Stefanie Aplin (Nesconset, NY / Smithtown East / Georgian Court University) came in to pinch hit and delivered an RBI single to score pinch-runner
Ashley Lubisky (Jenkintown, PA / Springside Chestnut Hill Academy).
With still no outs in the inning, Holmes-Stall came in to pinch hit, lofting a double over the right fielder's head to score both Aplin and Smith in tying the game at 10 apiece.
A walk to sophomore
Jessica Carlucci (Manalapan, NJ / Saint John Vianney High School) and an intentional free pass to sophomore
Lauren Serrato (Litchfield Park, AZ / Verrado High School) then brought up Prihoda, who singled to center field to give the Seahawks the win.
Overall, the Seahawks combined for 16 hits, while the Dragons had 14.
Junior
Morgan Brown (Buckeye, AZ / Verrado) picked up her eighth victory of the season, throwing 2.2 innings in relief of freshman
Amelia Van Orman (Orange, CA / Lutheran High School of Orange County).
Game 1 Recap – Drexel 5, Wagner 0
The Seahawks combined for three hits in the contest as, Gilbert and Tredway along with freshman
Alyssa Tucker (Laguna Niguel, CA / Santa Margarita Catholic) all reached base safely.
Tredway singled in the fifth inning to extend her hitting streak to 11 games, while Smith followed up with a walk, but a strikeout and a pop up ended the scoring threat.
Drexel scored three runs in the fourth and two runs in the fifth, as Taylor Kent led the Dragons with two RBIs. The Dragons outhit the Seahawks 9-3 for the game.
Senior
Gina Massaro (Levittown, PA / Conwell-Egan Catholic) suffered her first loss of the season after pitching five innings, while Brown threw two scoreless frames in relief.
Wagner is next in action on Saturday, April 22 when the Seahawks host Mount St. Mary's in a Senior Day doubleheader vs. the Mountaineers with game one set for 1:00 p.m.
