Riverside, RI - The Wagner College men's tennis team suffered their first Northeast Conference (NEC) defeat of the season, falling to the Bryant University Bulldogs, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon.
In suffering their first conference setback of the season, the Seahawks fall to 9-6 on the year, 3-1 in league play while Bryant improves to 7-11 and 2-0 in conference matches.
"Today's match was much closer than what the final score says," commented second-year head coach
Jason Sinkoff. "All nine matches were extremely tight and competitive and could have gone either way. Bryant has been the team to beat in the conference for the last couple of years and we were able to go step-for-step with them today. Going forward, we just need to elevate our games up another level, and I like our chances if we face them in the conference tournament in a few weeks."
The Bulldogs swept all three doubles matches, but the Seahawks were very competitive throughout despite falling by two points in all three doubles matches.
In singles action, three of the six matches needed either a tiebreaker or an extra set to be decided. Sophomore
Dale Sandy (Durban, South Africa/Kersney College Secondary School) and classmate
Anatoliy Lashkul (Kiev, Ukraine/High School #78) were bested in the tiebreakers in the second set.
Freshman
Dylan Walters (Johannesburg, South Africa/ St Stithians Boys' College) was able to take the first set at No. 4 action, 6-4, against Artur Jakubowski before falling 6-3, 6-3 in sets two and three.
The Seahawks will travel to Middlebury, CT to tangle with Post University at Edgewood Bath & Tennis at 3:30 p.m.
