Staten Island, NY - The Wagner men's tennis team snapped a five-match losing streak this afternoon, shutting out neighboring NCAA Division III College of Staten Island, 9-0 at the CSI Tennis Center. With the win, the Seahawks improve to 7-5 overall on the season while the Dolphins falter to 0-2.
The Green & White swept doubles play to take a 3-0 lead in the match. Sophomores
Anatoliy Lashkul (Kiev, Ukraine/High School #78) and
Dale Sandy (Durban, South Africa/Kersney College Secondary School) and sophomore
Eric Poland (Fort Meyers, FL/Bishop Verot) and freshman
Dylan Walters (Johannesburg, South Africa / St Stithians Boys' College) won at No. 1 & No. 3 doubles play, respectively, securing 8-0 victories. Second-year Seahawk
Ilya Kneppelhout (Woubrugge, Netherlands/Scala College Secondary School) and junior
Charlton Boyd (Shreveport, LA/Loyola College Prep) defeated Chris Pinto & Raymond Hwang, 8-2.
The Seahawks were victorious in all six singles matches. Freshman
Hans Ohrner (Margate, FL/Coral Springs Christian Academy) earned his tenth singles victory of the year at No. 1, besting Matthew Vesci, 6-1; 6-0. Walters evened his overall dual match record to 3-3 after claiming a 6-3; 6-2 win over Andrew Adia at No. 2. Poland and Kneppelhout posted back-to-back straight set wins at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. Rounding out the victories for the Green & White, Boyd picked up career win number 45, and his tenth career victory at No. 5, defeating Mukhiddin Nurriddinov, 6-1; 6-0. Junior
Allen Wang (Clovis, CA/Buchanan) picked up career win No. 28 as he earned a 6-1; 6-0 win at No. 6.
Wagner continues its lengthy road trip as they head to Fairfield, CT for a Northeast Conference (NEC) match against the Sacred Heart Pioneers at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 5.
