Bryn Mawr, PA - The Wagner men tennis team suffered its first loss of the 2016-17 season, falling 5-2 at Big East members, Villanova, on Saturday evening. The Seahawks now stand at 6-1 on the season while the Wildcats even their record at 1-1.

"We were down early in a lot of sets but were able to come back and fight to the end," commented second-year head coach Jason Sinkoff. "This team shows a tremendous amount of heart and determination. I believe that is going to pay off later on in the season, especially when we see more conference opponents."

Sinkoff also added, "It's always tough losing a close match, but we'll learn from this and handle those situations better the next time they present itself."

The Wildcats took a 1-0 edge in the overall match after taking No. 1 and No. 3 doubles match by identical 6-3 scores. The Green & White was able to tie the overall match at 1-1 after freshman Siddharth Anand (New Delhi, India / Modern School Barakhamba Road) was able to post his eighth singles victory of the season and improve to 2-0 out of No. 5 spot, defeating Matt Phelps, 6-2; 7-5.

The Wildcats clinched the win after posting three straight victories at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4, with Nova's Dylan Flanagan edging freshman Dylan Walters (Johannesburg, South Africa / St Stithians Boys' College), 5-7; 7-6 (9-7); 6-2 for the win.  Sophomore Anatoliy Lashkul (Kiev, Ukraine/High School #78) improved to a team-best 10-5 on the season, as he defeated Luis Miranda, 6-4; 3-6; 7-6 (7-5) in a hard-fought contest.

The Seahawks will be back in action on February 19 as they travel to the Bronx to tangle with Atlantic 10 members, Fordham University at 4:30 p.m. and conclude the day with a match against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) members, Marist at 7:00 p.m.
