Staten Island, NY - The Wagner men's tennis team posted their second shutout of the season, defeating the Saint Peter's University Peacocks, 7-0, on Sunday morning at the Wagner Tennis Courts.
With the win, the Seahawks remain perfect on the season at 4-0 in dual matches while the Peacocks fall to 0-2 to start the season.
"It was a sweltering & muggy day on the courts, and both teams showed signs that the weather was a factor," commented Wagner head coach
Jason Sinkoff. "For us, our guys were able to stay strong and battle today, which was great to see as we were able to pick up the win."
The Seahawks swept through doubles play, earning the first point of the match. Junior
Charlton Boyd (Shreveport, LA/Loyola College Prep) and sophomore
Ilya Kneppelhout (Woubrugge, Netherlands/Scala College Secondary School) go to 3-0 on the season and earn their 17th win as a pair, defeating Andres Rojas/Douglas Nover, 6-1.
The Green & White secured the doubles point in No. 1 play as sophomores
Anatoliy Lashkul (Kiev, Ukraine/High School #78 [Cumberland University]) and
Dale Sandy (Durban, South Africa/Kersney College Secondary School) earned their sixth win, defeating Jorge Rodriguez/Ivan Knezevic, 6-2.
Sophomore
Eric Poland (Fort Meyers, FL/Bishop Verot) and newcomer
Hans Ohrner (Margate, FL/Coral Springs Christian Academy) was able to hang on for a 7-6 (7-4) victory at No. 3 over Gabe Russotto and Cuong Lam.
In singles play, newcomer
Siddharth Anand (New Delhi, India/Modern School Barakhamba Road) won 6-1; 6-0 over Nover in No. 4. Kneppelhout edged Knezevic, 6-3; 6-4 in No. 3 before the Green & White official sealed the match at No. 1 as Sandy defeated Rodriguez, 7-6 (7-3); 6-2.
Poland posted a comeback win at No. 2. After falling to Rojas, 4-6 in the first set, he was able to come back for the victory, 6-4; 6-1.
"Eric battled all day," said Sinkoff. "He saved match points in both doubles and singles as grinded his way to a solid three-set win."
Wagner will be back in action as they travel to Hempstead, NY from September 23 through September 25 for the Hofstra University Invitational.
