Staten Island, NY - The Wagner men's tennis team picked up its first win of the season, a 6-1 triumph over St. Francis Brooklyn in Northeast Conference (NEC) play this morning.
Wagner concludes its doubleheader with a 3:30 p.m. match against Rider.
In the game against the Terriers, the Green & White was able to secure the first overall point, taking all three doubles matches. Â
The sophomore pairing of
Eric Poland (Fort Meyers, FL/Bishop Verot) and
Ilya Kneppelhout (Woubrugge, Netherlands/Scala College Secondary School) blanked the Terriers' duo of Stefan Gmiljovic/Tim Cecere, 6-0.
Freshman
Hans Ohrner (Margate, FL/Coral Springs Christian Academy) and junior
Charlton Boyd (Shreveport, LA/Loyola College Prep) defeated Zurab Tskhakaia/Diego Alcocer, 6-2 to secure the doubles match. Â Sophomore
Dale Sandy (Durban, South Africa/Kersney College Secondary School) and newcomer
Anatoliy Lashkul (Kiev, Ukraine/High School #78) were also victorious in No. 1 doubles play, 6-2, over Alejandro Ridruejo/Guillermo Artiz.
In singles play, Wagner jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in the overall match as Poland bested Gmiljovic, 6-4; 6-2 while Sandy edged Ridruejo, 6-4; 6-4. Â
St. Francis Brooklyn earned its lone point of the match in No. 2 singles as Artiz defeated Lashkul, 7-5; 6-3
The Green & White secured the win as Kneppelhout picked up his 16th career singles victory. After dropping the first set, to Tskhakaia, 5-7; the sophomore closed out the match, 6-1; 6-1.
