Water Polo To Meet San Diego State In NCAA Tournament Play-In Game At 7:00 PM Tonight

 – The #18 Wagner (29-9, 12-0 MAAC) women's water polo team, fresh off their third consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship, is set to square off against #13(T) San Diego State (17-16) tonight at 7:00 p.m. in one of two NCAA Tournament Play-in games.

Following the matchup between the Seahawks and the Aztecs, UC San Diego, which is serving as host site for the play-in games, will compete against Whittier at 9:00 p.m. (EST).

The Green & White enter the contest riding a 14 game winning streak while San Diego State are winners of seven of their last ten. The Seahawks captured their automatic bid by defeating Marist 8-5 in the MAAC Title contest as the Aztecs bested Pacific 10-9 in three overtimes to claim the Golden Coast Championship.

This will be the sixth matchup between the two squads in their program histories as San Diego State holds a slight 3-2 advantage in victories. Wagner however has won the last two contest with the latest coming in 2015 when the Seahawks defeated the Aztecs 10-9 in an overtime.

The winner of Tuesday's contest will advance to play #1 Southern California (23-0).

Wagner has been led by a trio of senior captains; Lily Doerfler (Annapolis, MD/ Broadneck), Jess Lundgren (Queensland, Australia/ Mountain Creek), and Megan Rodriguez (Danville, CA/ San Ramon Valley), each of whom earned All-MAAC First Team accolades.

Lundgren was named the MAAC Offensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive year after totaling a league and school single season record 144 goals. The dynamic center also dished 61 assists and recorded over 100 steals on the season.

Doerfler was also won of the top goal scorers in the conference as she accumulated 91 scores on the year while Rodriguez led the MAAC in assists with 118.

The defensive anchor is goalie Emily Riddle (Edmonton, Alberta/ Dr. E.P. Scarlett) who posts an impressive goals against average of 7.09 while registering over 200 saves on the season.

Scouting San Diego State

Junior Caroline Israels leads the Aztecs in scoring as she has amassed 58 goals on the season while tossing out 23 assists. Junior Ioli Benekou is their second leading goals scorer as she totaled 48 on the year.

Senior Rachel Mitchell is the team's top goaltender, she posts a goals against average of 7.03 and has recorded 317 saves.
