Results West Hartford, CT – The Wagner men's tennis team stopped a season-high six match losing with a dominant performance against America East member, Hartford, defeating the Hawks, 6-1, at the Hartford Tennis Courts on Friday afternoon.
With the victory, the Green & White improves to 7-9 on the season while Hartford falls to 1-14.
"Today was an all-around great team win," commented head coach
Jason Sinkoff. "We got off to a slow start in doubles, but the guys rallied and found a way to get the win. I am very pleased with what I saw today as we thrived and executed on important points."
The Seahawks took two of three matches in doubles to secure the first point of the overall match. The tandem of freshman
Ilya Kneppelhout (Woubrugge, Netherlands/Scala College Secondary School) and sophomore
Charlton Boyd (Shreveport, LA/Loyola College Prep) improved to 12-3 overall as a pairing and 9-3 in dual matches as they bested Daniel Rombola and Luis Montes, 6-4, in No. 1 Flight Doubles.
Freshmen
Dale Sandy (Durban, South Africa/Kersney College Secondary School) and
Eric Poland (Fort Meyers, FL/Bishop Verot) were victorious in No. 2 Flight Doubles, defeating William Drumwright and Nicholas Sharwako, 6-4. For Sandy and Poland, the win marked the duo's seventh triumph of the season and improved to 4-2 in the No. 2 doubles spot.
Kneppelhout picked up his team-leading 14th singles victory of the season while improving to 11-4 in dual matches as he earned a 6-1; 6-3 win over Drumwright. Poland followed suit with a 6-4; 6-4 victory in No. 3 flight singles over Sharwako.
Sophomore
Allen Wang (Clovis, CA/Buchanan) clinched the match for the Seahawks, beating Montes, 6-2; 6-2. "Allen played extremely well today and helped us clinched the match today," commented Sinkoff after the contest. "He continues to improve match-by-match by his hard work in practice, and it translates to match play."
Boyd ran his overall career singles record to 29-14; 23-11 in dual matches as he was victorious over Bryan Einstoss, 6-2; 6-3. Sandy and Rombola closed out the day in a back-and-forth singles match, as Sandy ultimately edged Rombola, 7-6 (7-5); 3-6; 6-0.
Wagner will be back in action on Sunday, April 10, from the Wagner Tennis Courts as they welcome Northeast Conference (NEC) rival, Sacred Heart. The match is slated to start at 1:00 p.m.
