Staten Island, NY - In tightly contested Northeast Conference (NEC) men's tennis match, the Wagner Seahawks were edged by the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers, 4-3, at the Wagner Tennis Courts on Monday afternoon.

With the loss, Wagner falls to 7-13 overall and finishes conference play with a 1-5 record while the Mountaineers improve to 11-9 and 1-1 in league play.

The Mountaineers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after sweeping all three doubles matches. After taking No. 1 doubles by a 6-2 margin, the Seahawks pairing of sophomore Charlton Boyd (Shreveport, LA/Loyola College Prep) and freshman Ilya Kneppelhout (Scala College Secondary School) fought valiantly in No. 2 doubles play.

Boyd/Kneppelhout took on the tandem of Louis Tonon/Brandon Wortkotter in a back-and-forth, highly competitive match. With the match tied at 5-5, Tonon/Wortkotter was able to edge the Seahawks' duo, 7-5.

Mount St. Mary's took a 3-0 lead after picking up wins at No. 2 & No. 3 singles. Freshman Dale Sandy (Durban, South Africa/Kersney College Secondary School) gave the Green & White its first win of the day, defeating Austin Blake, 6-4; 7-6 (7-5).

Boyd earned his 14th singles victory of the season, tying him with Kneppelhout for the team lead, as the second-year Seahawk won a hard, fought, 7-6 (7-3); 2-6; 6-4 victory at No. 4.

The win marked Boyd's 32nd career victory, as he runs his all-time singles mark to 32-15 and 26-12 in dual matches.

The Mount clinched the victory at No. 6 singles just before sophomore Allen Wang (Clovis, CA/Buchanan) was victorious, 7-5; 4-6; 10-6.

The Green & White will close out the 2015-16 regular season tomorrow, April 19, as they welcome Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) member, Coppin State.
