Staten Island, NY - The Wagner men's tennis team dropped its Northeast Conference (NEC) home match against the Saint Francis U Red Flash, 5-2, on Friday afternoon.
With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 7-11 and 1-3 in league play while the Red Flash improves to 10-8 and remain unbeaten in league contests at 2-0.
"Our guys competed against one of the top teams in the conference and stayed competitive throughout today's match," said first-year head coach
Jason Sinkoff. "Every match we are playing better and better. As a coach, it's what you want to see as the conference tournament rapidly approaches."
The Seahawks fell behind early in the match by dropping all three doubles matches. Wagner nearly avoided the sweep as the pairing of sophomores
Allen Wang (Clovis, CA/Buchanan) and
John Andersson (Gislaved, Sweden/Gardesskolan) were edged in Flight No. 3 doubles by the duo of Rodrigo Tico and Eli Cerdan, 7-5.
In singles competition, freshman
Eric Poland (Fort Meyers, FL/Bishop Verot picked up his ninth singles victory of the year and tied the match at 1-1 as he defeated Tico, 6-1; 6-2.
"In my opinion, Eric (Poland) played his best tennis of the season today," commented Sinkoff. "He structured points well and played at a very high level from the first point to the final point, and it can be attributed to a great week of practice."
After Saint Francis U had taken No. 2 and No. 1 singles matches, sophomore
Charlton Boyd (Shreveport, LA/Loyola College Prep) earned his 13th victory of the season (31st of his career) as he defeated Jan Vit Suntar, 7-5; 1-6, 6-2. The Red Flash clinched the win at No. 6 singles as Cerdan defeated sophomore
Jeremy Nuss (Portland, OR/Lincoln) in straight sets.
The Seahawks will be back in action on Sunday, April 17 as they welcome the Bryant University Bulldogs to the Wagner Tennis Courts. The match is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.
