Staten Island, NY – Senior midfielder
Shea Gegan (Belmar, NJ/Manasquan) exploded for five of her career-high six goals during a seven-goal run that bridged the halves as the Wagner women's lacrosse team overcame an early 6-3 deficit and went on to post an 11-9 victory over Saint Joseph's this afternoon at Hameline Field.
This was a milestone win for the Seahawks on several levels as it marked Wagner's first win of the season and career victory number one for first-year head coach
Katie Rowan, who took over the helm of the Wagner program last summer. In addition, today's comeback win was the Seahawks' first-ever over the Hawks in 13 tries, though last season's game was a tough 13-12 loss double-overtime defeat in Philadelphia.
Wagner, which opened the season 0-4 following difficult road tests at Iona, No. 3 Syracuse, American and Temple, improves to 1-4 on the season while the Hawks, who compete in the Atlantic 10, fall to 1-3.
After SJU's Sarah Smith capped a 3-0 run with a goal at the 6:17 mark of the first half, Seahawk junior attacker Olivia Streilien (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) made it a two-game at the intermission after tallying a goal off of a Gegan assist.
Wagner then erupted for six straight six straight goals to open the second half over a span of 8:25 in taking a 10-6 lead en route to the 11-9 win. Senior midfielder
Gretchen Fay (Spring Lake Heights, NJ/Manasquan) kick-started the second half with a goal at the 28:47 mark before Gegan, her former high school teammate, sank her game-changing five straight scores.
The Hawks trimmed the deficit to 10-8 after scoring two straight goals before Fay struck for her second score with 7:34 left to make it 11-8 and the Seahawks held on from there.
In addition to her six goals, which came on just eight shots, Gegan led the Seahawks in ground balls and caused turnovers with five apiece. Fay finished with two goals for Wagner, sophomore midfielder
Lauren Ednie (Verona, NJ/Verona) notched two points (1g, 1a), while Streilein and senior attacker
Kimmy Tumolo (Mullica Hill,, NJ/Clearview Regional) added one goal each.
In goal, senior
Katie Ferraro (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh) came up with six saves in registering the win.
For Saint Joseph's, Sarah Smith led the way with four points (3g, 1a), while Nora McCallion added three (2g, 1a). Goalkeeper Genevieve Giblin recorded seven saves for the Hawks.
The Green & White are next in action on Monday, March 14 when the Seahawks host American in a makeup of the scheduled season opener which was postponed back on February 12 due to inclement weather.
